WHATS WRONG ALREADY? cant start banshee w/kick starter
#1
Hey heres my story,
Bought my 95 banshee, about 2months ago, motor was worn out and i didnt know, i would only start by pushing it and catching it in gear and once in awhile it would start by kicking it.
So then i found it needs a rebuild and thats why it wasnt starting. I got it bored 20 over stock with wiseco pistons and cleaned the carbs. put the motor back in set it all up had to catch it in gear to start it then the next 2 times it started on 2nd kick. Took it out to trails the next day in a truck got there wont start all day have to catch it in gear everwhere. go over all wiring everything is good. clean carbs runs better but wont kick start. adjusted the carbs some while running nothing works. did everything this thing wont kick start.
the only thing when i had the reeds out one of the pedals on one of the cages was sticking open alittle. i know they say to change them when that happens but i didnt. is this my entire KICKSTARTING problem????????????????????????????
please help i am ready to sell this quad or take it to a shop and pay them high price to find the problem.
please help me im dying
oh and i have 6 and a half hours to 7 on the rebuilt motor.
thankyou

im so excited now i busted my *** pushing that thing and taking everything apart and everything.
i kinda figured it was reeds but my dad said nah

Bad reeds will keep the bike from starting easily, change them now. Also, after you rebuilt the bike, have you checked the compression and done a leak down? Low compression will cause a bike to not fire up with the kick starter, but it will fire when pushed.

When i checked my motor before i rebuilt it , it read 89 on the compression meter. After i got it rebuilt , it was 92. ?? i think my friends guage is wrong, because my friend has a banshee bored 20 over with wiseco pistons same as me and you can feel a difference kicking them , his is easier and the pistons get a few more ups and downs and mine is harder and stops when you cant kick anymore. And his runs fine so it cant be worn out or whatever. I had it rebuilt by a good shop/guy.
i am going to try reeds today if i have enough time.

Your compression should be between 150 to 250 psi. Depending on how much your machine is modified. Low compression with faulty reeds will cause it not to start. Try turning your reeds around (flip) so that the gap is now pressing against your reed cage.
Good luck

H300F. Have you taken both plugs out and kicked it then? It may be that your crank is partially seized. I had a YZ 125 that my brother took for a ride and put straight gas in it. It didn't toast the whole motor, but it did seize the crank. It would run if you push started it but it wouldn't stay running at idle. Of course he didn't tell me until I figured it out. When you kick it with the plugs out you should hear the pistons go up and down many times not just a couple. Did your shop guy check the crank?

My quad runs at idle good, and the shop probably checked the crank. so i am pretty sure it is alright. I doubt it is messed up.
I took the reeds to the guy that rebuilt the motor, and he said they should be good and to leave them alone. And he said it is dirt in your carbs, and alot of people clean them many times, and they bring them to him and he gets them cleaned out and they work.???
So tonight for the 3rd time I cleaned the carbs really really good. I had to catch it in gear to get it running, and then it revved up really high and i had to turn the idle down. I guese i got dirt out of some small spot. So now i turned the idle down a whole lot and it idle's good and runs good. I warmed it up, and then shut it off for a couple minutes. Tryed to kickstart it but it wouldn't start. So tomorrow me and my dad are messing around with the depth the needle thing goes down.
If we can't get it to kick start after doing this we are going to take it to the shop who did my motor.

1st check compression should be in 120 range on fresh motor and should be within 5lbs for each cylinder, 2nd check for weak spark if spark is not strong enough you will have problems starting with kicker but push starting causes the motor to spin much faster making much easier to start, also check the slow circuit (pilot jet) in the carbs for any blockage and check if they are big enough I'm gonna bet you should find your problem if you check these areas carefully
