Changing sprockets on Raptor, a few questions.
#1
I wanted to change the sprockets on my raptor for better acceleration. I never use 5th gear. I do mostly trail riding and coming out of turns a little more acceleration would be awesome. I have also heard that at the dunes you climb hills between 2nd and 3rd gears. Is that true?
What are most people doing to change the gearing?
What do I need to change if I do go smaller in the front?
Does the quality of the chain make a difference in performance?
When you change the size how much top end are we talking about losing?
Thanks again guys!

1. Most people gear up instead of down I think. I'm on the other 1/2 .. I gear down. Stock Warrior is 13/40 I'm 12/40 right now going to 12/42
2. Depending on how slack your chain is, if you go down to 12T front you may have to remove some links in your chain.
3. I would assume so. A higher quality chain will most likely be lighter, and pivot/roll more freely than the stock chain. Probably last longer too .. but all just assumptions.
4. Typically going down one tooth on the front equates to approximately 5mph top end loss.

I 100% agree with you the 1st half of gears are nuts, I would like a little more accel on the 2nd half. They way I drive is basicly 1/2 throttle to 3/4 throttle on the 1st half of 1st and 2nd , then nailing it for the 2nd half. 3rd - 5th I can nail the entire length.
Agree or disagree?

jscar If your running with a stock motor a 12t will make a huge difference in performance. You will NOT kill it as much .You'll be able to bog it down in corners more. My dealer told me that the stock chain is only rated for a 400cc engine. While you're chaoginge the front sprocket I would spend the extra $$$ and get the hole set- up. I like the D.I.D X-Ring ATV chain. You'll save money not having to weld your case from a broken chain.

I ran a 12-tooth up front on my stock Raptor for a while... It was DEFINATELY quicker on acceleration and much more managable at slower speeds. All I had to do was tighten the chain; the stock chain worked fine with a 12-tooth. If you like to really get on it out of a turn, you'll have trouble keeping the front-end down! The only thing I didn't like was that it felt like it needed a 6th gear on the long, flat stretches. I switched back to the stock 13-tooth & like it just the same. If you rarely even use 5th gear, you'll like a 12-tooth; it'll accelerate like a bottle rocket!

I had a 12T for a while, but I would hit my top speed in a heartbeat, so now Im back to 13/40. Once I get my new chain Im gonna go with new 13/39 or 38 sprockets. If you have a stock raptor and dont do any WOT 5th gear runs, then go ahead and get the 12T, you will love it.
