I just got a Rancher 4X4 ES about a month ago and I love it! However I do have a question about the clutch adjustment. How do you know if your clutch is out of adjustment? (this is my first quad) The reason I ask is that whenever I shift from neutral to first or neutral to revers the bike lurches fairly hard. Other times it will engage rather easy. I'm just wondering if this sounds normal or if my clutch is too tight maybe.

Thanks

When you move the shifter with your foot, you release the clutch. If the throttle is opened at this time, the engine revs speed up. When you have shifted to the next gear and remove foot pressure from the shift lever, the clutch engages, causing the lurch you experience, when the high-revving engine is suddenly connected to the drivetrain. If you back off the throttle when changing gears, you will minimize this lurch.

If the shifter changes gears crisply and the clutch doesn't slip when in gear, your adjustment is probably o.k. A service manual will tell you how to adjust the clutch when necessary, if this information isn't in your rider's manual. The Rancher appears to be a fine machine, enjoy it!

The only time mine has done that is when I forget to turn off the choke when I first get out to ride. Other than that I dont think that is normal.

I agree. I have a 2000 Rancher NO ES and I find that the only time mine has done that is if I have messed with the Idle settings and have the bike rev'd up to fast. I have also experienced the "Choke" treatment as well. If none of the above are true, I would recommend that you get it in for service...<g> Happy Riding!

hmm, mine is a 2x4ES and if the engine is rev'd too much(even a little) it won't engage from N to 1 or R. I've had to get used to it. You must let it idle down first.

It should not engage about a certain RPM measurement but I dont know what it is. It sounds like what is happening to him is like when I forget my choke is on. I just get so wrapped up and excited that the wife is letting me ride!!!

I experienced the same problem with the clutch on my Rancher, right off the dealer's lot. I could barely shift into any gear without effort.

So I took it to the dealer and they said it was WAY out of adjustment. They fixed it, and now it shifts like a dream.

I'd contact the dealer if you feel it's out of adjustment and you're sure it's not a high-rev'ed engine when shifting problem.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys. Just to clear up a few things mine is the ES electric shift and not the manual foot shift. I never have to use the choke and the idle isn't high. The bike shifts fine except for the lurch going into 1st or R. I will have the dealer look at it but I wanted to see first if maybe it was normal for an ES machine, sounds like it isn't. I also have the service manual on order and should have it in the near future.

Thanks.

Mike, I got the same bike you do, except for the color. And I, like everyone else had not had any problems w/ my shifting except when the idle is adjusted to high or the choke is up. Before I'd take it to the dealer to spend your hard earned money I'd play with the idle **** first and tune it down a little and see if that fixes it. If not, well you were going to take it to the dealer anyway, so what can hurt.

P.S. Watch out for the engine when adj. the idle....it's pretty hot!)
