Honestly,, jumping is easy!! all you have to do is gas and go..
Landing,, That is the hard part! Learn to land not jump

You want to try to press down on the quad just prior to leaving the jump...you're trying to get the springs to bounce back just before the wheels leave the ground. Not too soon, not too late. It takes practice to get the feel of when it's right.
When you're just starting out with pre-load, keep it even from front to back. Later, there may be times when you want to preload the back more, or the front more. For example, when you going over a short double-jump, you may want to pre-load the back shock more so that the back end hops up higher than the front. This would put you at a down-ward angle to match the landing ramp. If you're going for a step-up double, you may want to pre-load the front more so that the front of the quad stays higher to match the upcoming plateau.
Getting the feel for this takes practice. In a controlled setting, try pre-loading different ways to learn how your quad responds. The most important thing is to keep the rubber side of the quad pointing down...

this is from that site. http://www.douggust.com/content/ask_menu_riding.htm

not sure my old shocks don't have that but it sounds like a compression damping screw. one way should stiffen and the other should soften the shocks compression
