Default Why more rebuilds on two strokes?

Is it just because of the higher rpm's? If so, then wouldn't some of the newer high-reving four-strokes need to rebuilt just as often?

its because of the oil process. You won't have to re-build a two stroke very often if you take care of the piston and rings by making sure that it is getting the right amount of oil and the right kind

Alot of people who rebuild there two strokes are because they are not mixing enough oil and are burning things up. Also running lean will cause it.
You would be suprised at how long a banshee can go on a set of pistons if you take care of it.

I'm with Shav0 on this one. If you have to rebuild your two stroke too often, you probrably are going to end up trashing a 4 stroke. The only exception I could see would be if you raced.

You want to run a 2stroke with as fat a main as you can, as this and running a moderate amount (32:1) of good oil will do wonders, I would stay away from the extreme ratios like 100:1 or 80:1 that is some oil manufactures selling point. IMO run 32:1 even if it's walmart oil, instead of 100:1 of some expensive exotic oil even with all the promise, it's just not enough oil and gives you no room for error. I personally run Klotz Super Techniplate at 32:1, this stuff is 80% synthetic and 20% castor bean oil, and as a plus it smells great and burns clean.

I believe the 2 strokes can last a long time. A friend never had a problem with her '96 Blaster that she bought new until January '03. That's a good 6-7 years. And she doesn't ride the thing all that easy. Like anything, take care of it and it will take care of you.

Other than the fact everyone else mentioned, that there is no oiling system other than the gas, they also wear out faster because there are big holes in the sides of the cylinder which wears the rings out faster, and they make lots of heat (same reason they make more power). Not to mention they spend more time revved up than the average four-stroke.

Usually a loss of compression will tell you.

How about the fact that there on compression stroke every revolution hence the 2 in 2 stroke ninstead of every other time like the 4 in for stroke . Fuel mixtures are a big part of it also the fact that the rings dont rotate the port ledge's as mentioned before oil in fuel= carbon
Run it hard and rebuild it I have had sled after sled motor running on 80:1 60:1 with no crank damage . less oil faster flame propagation
if the compression drops below 110 psi rebuilt it . good general rule of thumb
