If the clutch fingers are grooved then yes, replace the basket also, but if not don't worry about it right now as it turns a 20 minute clutch replacement into a 1 - 2 hour job. You have to after removing the side cover and all the springs with the clutches and plates which up to there is straight forth and simple, to now having to use an impact wrench to remove the basket and then you have to drill out the steel rivit pins that hold the gear on the stock basket to use the gear on the new basket. If you decide to change it be care with the little bearing spacer that can sometimes fall out of the gear shaft.

The outside of the clutch basket looks like it has been worn, it almost looks like somthing has been running against it.
What would cause this?

That I would think is metal fragments that where caught on the bottom of the basket as it rotates from not changing the oil frequently but that is only a guess, anyways what you need to look at is the inside part of the fingers where the clutches and plates slide into, the grooves happen on the side of resistance of each finger so only one side will show grooves if damaged and not the other so check both sides after you remove the clutches and plates.
