The bigger the sproket on the front the faster on top end and the smaller, faster on low end. Lance

What gearing are you running now?

What are your riding conditions? Sand or hardpack?

For stock power in the sand the 15/42 is a hot set-up. For hardpack W.O.T. it won't be enough and you'll be R'd out looking for another gear.

How often do you get into 5th gear?

Do you need a lower gear?

Do you need a 6th gear?

Check out the Speed Calculator on this AWESOME Site

Well basicaly there is a 2 tooth difference

The lower the number on the fron sprocket the lower the gearing. The lower the gearing means more torque and less top end. From the sounds of it it sounds like you may be happier going to a 15th as it will give you uuumpf in first and second and might get you the gusto you need to be in third for your jump.

What Demon Said!

Also, may want to go with the 42 in back (a 43 in back means you'll need a longer chain!)

This should allow for second gear starts on drag racing where you get a little slipping.

Also, what size tires are you running?

I lost 9mph on asphault drags in the quarter mile. This probably doesnt matter but your type of terrain will. 17 is too high. 16 for dirt and 15 for sand is my opinion

I just switched from a 17 to a 15 for trail riding an couldn't be happier, the 17 is to tall for trails I hardly got out of 2nd gear, now I can stay in 3rd gear almost all day, plus the front is much lighter now

You'll prob want a 15th front sprocket. Smaller front will remove your top end but give you more lowe end power. Larger Front sprocket will give you less low end but more top end. If you rarely see 5th like I do then a 15th sprocket will help you.

Keep in mind also (as I have noticed) you'll prob shift a bit sooner with a smaller sprocket.
