Default My First ATV- '94 Sportsman, Have Questions

I’m 25 & just got my first ATV- ’94 Sportsman 400. It needed a topend rebuild, misc parts, a good cleaning & some TLC. I got it from a friend so it was pretty cheap. Between looking through this forum for info & checking out pics online I’m getting pretty excited all while its in hundreds of pieces right now. I’ve decided to go through the whole thing, flushing all fluids, replacing what needs replacing, adjusting what needs adjusting, & complete engine rebuild, while I’m waiting on all my parts. The friend I got it from gots the hookup on good machine work so it’s getting a pretty good port & polish and the head milled 20 thou. About to purchase a pipe for it & all I can find for my application is the AAEN torquer pipe or the Ritter utility machine pipe but didn't have much info on it. My first question: Is the clutch kit they sell w/ the pipes pretty good since they're made for the pipe's ($50), or would I be better off getting the HeelClicker kit (off ebay $100) instead. Now with those mods done I’m trying to find out ahead of time if I’m going to have jetting issues. Where do I start so I don’t burn this thing up. Got this great service manual and it says my main jet is a 200. A friend has a 38mm flatslide off his '96 scrambler that I could get cheap if it would work, but I'm not sure. I'm sposed to go to a colder plug because of the head shaving, right? What is the plug I should use? That’s it, thanks for reading. Give me some idea’s, info, or just tell me I’m crazy for doing all this to a 10yr old sportsman 4x4. Thanks, Justin

I went with Aaen on my 400Sportsman and I am more than pleased with it.You need to decide if you want a great pulling trail machine or a speedy machine.I have the Torquer pipe&silencer, green polaris primary spring,Blue Aaen secondary set 2-2,Boyson Power reeds, mild porting,UNI filter, carb jetted to 260,polished head(didnt mill it didnt want o have to use hi octane gas) These are great machines and I bet you will be happy with it no matter what. Let us all know what all you are doing and we can help steer you in the right direction. Brad

Hello guys... So a hard pullin or a speedy machine I need to decide??? I can't have both, or maybe somewhere in between? I'm thinking about a midrange pipe, maybe from Ritter cycle, thinking I might call Rick tomorrow & talk w/ him about what I could/ should do. Anybody else have any advise for me? I dont know where to start w/ the jetting, stock is 200. I live in florida (sea level) where its going to be in the mid 80's- mid 90's for the next 6 months, maybe the pipe I decide on will come w/ some to use. I have alot to learn about all this. I've searched though this forum & it seems you guys just find the right springs to use in the clutches instead of spending extra money on the 'kits'. The plug I got is a br8es (stock), anyone know if that will be alright, or if I need one colder what would that be? Thanks, more to come, Justin

Dont worry about jeting until you get your pipe and it will either have one with it or have recomendation as to what to use.And that is the right plug for your machine.
