I have a 500i auto 4x4 2002, While out riding, not pulling anything, I lost drive power. Smoke from the engine area.. I suspect the v belt, Is it common for those to let go so soon, if so where and how much for a new one

The AC mechanics I have spoken to have all said that due to the way the Duramatic transmission is designed burning the belt up is uncommon. I don't know the specifics on its design but do know they last for quite some time as long as they are kept dry.

If it is the belt you might want to see if you can find out what caused it to fail prematurely otherwise it is likely to do it again. I believe the belt is about $200 so it is pretty spendy.
