cheapest large-quanity oil? (somthing in a 5 gallon?)
#1
my local farm and fleet just had a sale for the 5 gallong Shell rotella diesel oil.
i am tired of paying 2-4 bucks per quart for the valvoline atv oil, and want to buy 2-3 5 gallong buckets of whatever i decide to get...
i just want to know what everyone has run out of 5 gallon or 1 gallon containers before i spend the money to find its bad for the DS....
i was planning on getting 10w-40 to run all year.
(i normally wouldnt have a problem spending the 8 bucks or whatever on oil per change...but with 7 dollars a filter, and 8 in oil...its getting pricey...so im buying the SS re useable oil filter for 80 and thought i may as well switch oils as well)
let me know what you guys run and what you think of it!
Thanks

Once you start with a oil, it is better to stick with it, but it is your bike so you can do what you want to. Lance

for the first oil change i used bomb oil, but at 7 bucks a quart i decided not to stick with it. the valvoline atv oil says it has additives for wet clutches.... and i havnt had any issues (i have never seen the internals of my engine so i cant really attest to how it performs inside...)
maybe i should just stick with it.... what exactly does it do to the engine changing oil? (justs stress on the parts having to adjust to the oil?)

I am running the valvoline 10w-40 dura blend and havent had my stock clutch plates slip yet. I am not really for sure what changing the oil does but i have heard from several people that to stay with the same oil. I guess because your motor is ust to that oil and it is not good to change. Castrol GTX 10w 40 comes in 5 gallon jugs, is fairly cheep, and meets the specifications for useable oils as per the owners manual and many people on this board, as well as many other ATV and dualsport boards. It doubles as good automotive oil so you only need one oil if your other vehicles can use 10w-40...
I have tried many different oils over the years in my 1985 suzuki sp600 dualsport: Suzuki oil, Kawasaki, Spectro Golden, plain 10w-30 valvoline (burnt a clutch on that!), Mobil1, Syntec, Valvoline ATV, and Castrol GTX. Also tried many weights over the years in that bike. Its air cooled, but internal results should be the same.
Grantid, The synthetic oils should clean any deposits out a bit. I did notice it tended to aquire oil leaks easier on synthetic. More Oil seaps then leaks. Poor cam cover seal design on that bike. The synthetic just penetrates to well?
I have completly rebuilt that motor at about 14,000 miles?, and last year had to change second gear, so the case was split open again. With one rebuild on it, and 27,000 miles total (ridden hard on the trails and track) The only problems i have had is bad valve guide seals and second gear popping out. The transmission issue was due to hard ridding and just old age. ( Its 19 years old ) Likewise with the seals.
It was verry clean inside and the bore looked fine.
I run Castrol GTX 10w-40 in my DS and plan on rebuilding the motor this winter as it was purchased used, and I just like to know its in good shape and where its been. I also want to upgrade the shift forks to 03/04 units while im in there.
I dont know what was all in my ds in the past, but i have had valvoline ATV, and Now Castrol GTX 10w-40.
