Blasters_rule,
When you say they won't work I'm not sure I know what you mean exactly..do the cables just not move or do the shoes seem to be extending to the drum & just not slowing the bike? If the cables are working and the brake shoes are being forced against the brake drum it's possible that the pads have become glazed (smooth) and no friction is there. Before replacing the brake shoes, you might try removing them and sanding them with some course sand paper to remove the glaze & rough them up which creates friction between the shoes & the drum.
If the linkage is the problem you need to determine whether it is in the cable or the actual linkage at the drum,, in which case removal & lubing/cleaning the moving parts should solve the problem until the next time. Unfortunately, a good brake system is not the Blaster's strong point, but it's one reason the bike is the most reasonable priced sport bike.
I'm reminded of a story about Mr. Ferarri many years ago when someone complained that his cars had lousy brakes. Mr Ferarri drew himself up to his full 5'8" and snorted"My cars are made to GO, not STOP!"
Not a really practical reply, but it caused the complainer to shut up

The stock brakes are terrible. Mine lasted alittle over a year before they didnt work anymore. I have been looking into some aftermarket hydraulic brakes. That is about the only reliable setup for the Blaster.

Hotshoe Blasters don't have a drum in the back it is a mechanical disc which just doesn't work right. Trenga sells a kit and I have it but I would reccomend just adapting a set from another quad. You have to make it hydraulic.

yes, I was aware of the mech disc on the rear, altho I wasn't aware of a failure there other than just the normal poor function of mech brakes. I guess I was assuming the problem was basically with the front brakes since they do 70% of the braking. Of course if finances permit, an upgrade of the system is the way to go, but sometimes a temp fix is all that the wallet allows.

I have fixed a lot of Blaster rear brakes and know them inside out.

Blaster brakes are not the best. Agreed. But they should have no problems locking up the rear tires. If they don't then first check the cable. It's in a low spot and fills with dirt and water. The cable has to work freely. Also check the pads.

If they still won't work, email me and we will work on an exchange. There are a few parts in there that can break and it's best if I take a look at it.
