I own a 97 300EX. The last two months I have had battery problems. The problem is my battery won't hold the charge. I replaced the battery yesterday and checked to see if there was a drain on the system. I had .7V drainning the battery. I traced it to a single part on the ATV. The part is located on the clutch side, mounted next to the air filter box, and looks like a large heat sink with 4 wires coming out. Can someone identify the part, provide information on its purpose and tell me how much money to replace? Thanks for you help and sorry for my stupidity.

To keep your battery from draining unhook your neg wire off the battery when not in use. You probably have a bad rectifier/regulator unit which is leaking as it sits, or the battery has an internal short.

I've heard of this problem being caused by water. A friend of mine had one go bad on his '00 EX, so on the new one he siliconed around all the connectors.

Its your rectifier, it converts the AC charging power from your engine to DC. Its also the only component that remains connected even when your ignition switch is off. If its only a
rectifier then replacement should be less than $100.00, if it contains the regulator or CDI the price could run up to around $300.00.

The prices quoted above are for new parts !! If you need a cdi or a that other part call East Coast ATV in Pa. I bought a CDI for $50. It s out of a 99'.
Good Luck !!!
