My 500 4X4 scrambler runs ok when the engine is cold but has recently stared to backfire though the exhaust when it warms up to running temp (backfiring when throttle is closed) and it will no longer idle when hot. I've been a bit slack coz I hav'nt checked anything out yet.

Check the valve clearance

 

i dont know if this is the same, but my couisins scrammy was backfiring b/c of reverse override malfunction when going forward.
