How Hot 400s
#1
Well, I got the cat back together, took her out for a run seems to run good but after spending 1200.00 on parts I was nervous about every ting! Ok Question is how hot do your 400 oil cooled, run. I could feel the heat of mine on my legs and you could feel the heat on the tranny case. My temp light didn't come on [ I know it works] fan didn't come on. I was out with 2 girlie guys one on a yammy and one on a honda. [ I know Dave is going to read my post] And there weren't as hot as mine. [ ya I know there not cats] But seriously you could tell the difference. Any Information would be great. And Dave sorry about the humour on the cat forum........... no not really

I never hear the fan on mine, it doesn't seem to run as hot as yours does. I only hear the fan when I really work the bike. By that I mean pulling a thousand pounds of firewood through a rough trail that's about a mile long. Even then, it only runs for about 30 seconds and it's good to go again. I am using the AC 0W40 synthetic, and that seems to have helped both in keeping the temp down, and improving the shifting. I also keep the oil cooler very clean. Sometimes I think it runs too cold, and am thinking of going up a heat range on the plug. What plug are you running in it?

We have 04's and I can tell you, in summer there's plenty of heat coming out of these things. On occasion, when we stop to chit chat without shutting down, the fan WILL come on. If we're climing hills and it's a bear, the fan will come on. Remember now, we're in Nevada, which is mostly desert. I think they just run hot. WE always check the oil to make sure we're not short, but it doesn't make any difference. They just run hot.
In the winter, all this heat is welcome. It keeps our legs warm...

My arctic cat 400i fan runs about 30-50% during the summer here in nevada. The temps last July 4th holiday was about 106 around the salt flats near sand mountain area. when I take breaks in the summer, I kill the engine after about 3-5 mintues standing still and leave the power on and the engine kill switch engaged.

Hey Roger,
Where do you ride? I see your from Fallon. I don't know if you noticed but we're from Carson City. We're going down to Mina (NV) next week for a week. Set up in the RV park and then spend the week riding around the bazillion roads and trails out of there. I'm just counting the minutes.
I've never gone to Sand Mountain because I always thought it was mostly sport bikes and "wild and crazy guys". We're more into exploring trails and putting the miles on.
I hear the fed is closing more and more of that Sand Mountain area. Did you hear about the Pine Nut Mountain closure down by Minden/Gardnerville? More fed crap.
Happy riding. Didn't mean to post non-topic but I couldn't find an email address for you.

According to the manual the oil temperature switch should activate at 160 degrees C. The Fan switch should activate at 120 degrees C. But I can tell you that depending on how hard my 400 is working it does get a little warm. I have never heard the cooling fan come on like it does on my TRV.
On a side note. I used to own a suzuki King Quad that I started noticing running hot. After closer inspection. I discoverd the intake leaking. I sprayed WD-40 (use #212) around the carborator and head while the engine was running and it really changed the way the engine idled. I replaced the head gasket and tightened the carborator intake clamps and the problem went away. It still ran warm just not as warm.

Been riding the stillwater mountain area lately (both fallon and dixie valley sides) and the Grime's point area. also ride near desert queen mine and Ocala Cave on north 95 about 22 miles north of fallon. Going to the smith creek area to camp and ride (near cold creek east on hwy 50 about 75 miles from fallon)this weekend with some guys from work.
Haven't really been to sand mountain other than hitting a geocache there next to the entrance. I heard about pinenut but wasn't surprised by it. Its like the Clan Alpine mountain range, the Feds thinking about closing about 45,000 ac , making it a wilderness area.
fixed the email.

Anton, if you are worried about heat, just hook up an override switch to your fan, and you can control when it comes on and off, or it will come on when it is suppose to if you forget. I have one on mine and use it before deep water or something to prevent so much steam.

I think I need to take a look at oil circulation. When I put the head back together I used old car oil to flush out the system. Then did an oil change. But after noticing the heat I removed one of the rubber hoses that go from the engine to the rad, top one and pulled the wires off the plug. Turned it over and looked like that old oil coming out? So were do I start with this one. God I hope this bike doesn't cost me any more $$$$. After looking at the parts of the head, the only thing I saw out of whack was when I took the timing chain tensioner off it was fully extended??? When I put it back and let it self adjust it didn't come out that far. Now I'm wondering how this happened, as I never touched this part before, and most likely could be the cause of these problems. I think I might just as well bring it to my dealer and have him give it a once over for peace of mined.
