Default Starter solonoid. BBS needs your help!!

Hey guys. Need your help on this one. My starter solonoid took a dump on me. I am not able to get a parts number off the back of it. Anyone know if these are available at the auto parts store? Gotta part #????? Or is this a dealer only part? I need to get this thing back together. Thanks

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

I have heard you can take it to Lowes or Home Depot and match it up with one from a mower.Never tried it but it would be cheaper than the $50 or so Polaris wants for one.

BTW, I hope that it is the solonoid causeing my clicking. I know it isnt the battery. The starter will sometimes engage, and not engage at other times. No it wont engage at all. Just clicking from the solonoid. I kinda broke it taking it off. So I gotta replace it now anyways. If not, then I think it may be my brushes in the starter. I hope not though. Is there a trick to getting the starter off? The manual doesnt cover the removal of it. Do I have to remove the inner clutch cover? Because I tried to take it out before, but couldnt get the bottom bolt out all the way.

on my 400,i had to remove the inner cover then you will see the starter bracket, take thos 2 bolts out..then you need to remove your recoil housing and there is 2 more bolts in there, remove them and the starter should come right out..

Well, I will try and find a new solonoid tomorrow. If that dont work, then looks like I am going to have to make a clutch puller for the primary. How much do those starter rebuild kits cost?

I had the same problem on my 400 xplorer and it was the brushes that wore out. I got a starter rebuild kit off ebay for 35.00 if I remember right. That was for a two stroke i'm not sure if the 500 will take the same kit.

GreenMeanie, is this the rebuild kit you are talking about? If it is and worked good for you, I may get it (if the solonoid doesnt fix my problem). $36 sounds a lot better than $99
