K&N....why chance destroying your engine?
#1
I once thought that K&N had a good idea....got suckered into there advertising. After doing alot of searching on the net seeing the different types of test that people have put K&N through I personaly would never again use one of these filters in anything i own. The one in the truck came out PRONTO! Yes a K&N filter DOES allow more air flow and some gain in H.P. but also passes much more dirt. Racers who use K&N for the added gains also rebuild their engines at specific intervals. For those of you that feel K&N is the only way to go you might want to send in an oil sample (at your next oil change) just to see what the silica content is. A person invests quite a chunk of change when making an ATV purchase. It would suck to have an engines life cut short to do something as simple as an air filter.....Just something to think about.

K&n filters do let in more dust and dirt the regular foam air filters but i have modified a prefilter with the airbox, which traps alot more dirt than the regular filter did. i do fell the better throttle responce with K&N, with little thing like this, i keep the cat puuuring

never had k&n in my fourwheelers but had them in two of my pickup trucks a 90 ford 4x4 and a 98 ford 4x4 and with the 90 i gained about 3 miles to a gallon and more horsepower and with the 98 about 2 miles to a gallon and a lil horsepower never used one on the fourwheelers but when they make one for the 650 ac i will probably buy one and if my motor goes put the stock one back in cause that is what warranty is for and then tell yall how i fried the motor but there is very few ppl who drive as hard as i do but will keep and open mind on the atv k&n's for now

IF K AND N ARE SO BAD FOR TRUCK AND TRUCK AND YOU THINK DIRT GETS THROUGH THE FILTER AND DAMAGE THE
ENGINE DON'T YOU THINK K AND N WOULD BE GETTING SURED FOR ALL THE DAMAGE ENGINE I HAVE BEEN RUNNING
K AND N FOR 12 YEARS AND NO PROBLEMS ON MY ATVS TO TRUCK IF THE FILTER IS OILED RIGHT AND TAKING CARE OF
YOU WILL NOT HAVE NO PROBLEMS AND FINED DIRT WILL GET BY PAPER AND FOAM FILTER

Well I don't guess this would apply to ATVs, but in trucks the oil on K & N filters is one of the problems. The filters let in too much dirt and debris which is harmful to your engine. If you oil them up real good, then the oil gets sucked onto the MAF sensor and can cause the computer to run the engine at less than 100% efficiency. I've read quite a bit of negative stuff on K & N filters myself recently too. I've had them before and didn't notice a bit of difference except the $40 lighter my wallet became so I'll never have one again probably.

there is not a filter on the market that can trap ALL the dirt particles. The main thing with a K&N or S&B or any other cotton based filter is that it needs cleaned regularly. I worked for K&N for many years and we did many dirt test saturation tests and compared them to the top paper and foam filters on the market. Fact is the K&N's trapped more dirt than the papers or the foam. In fine sand and mud you have to run a pre-filter (outerwear) to trap the really fine particles and keep the water out. Water will rinse out the oil letting more dirt in. An ATVer should wash their cotton filter at least once a week in very dirty conditions to keep the filter working its best. I now work for a cotton filter company called S&B, very superior to K&N in flow and in workmanship. keep the filters clean, use a pre-filter on dunes and in the mud and your engine will last as long as it is maintained properly. KEEP RIDIN!

I wouldnt use a K&N filter if it were free. I had a FIPK on my 97 Ram, it was junk, V1 would snap the mount bolts, sucking crap into the engine, V2 was a long molded piece of plastic that ran to the front of the truck. This was a better idea, EXCEPT the filter was in the front of this thing and the moldings were crap, there were holes where the 2 pieces were formed together. I called and spoke with a guy at K&N, he said he would look at the next one himself and fedex it out, well I got the new one and it had more holes than the first. And Im trusting a $25,000 investment to these guys?
If you were blindly installing this, yes you are 100% correct that it will flow more air (and lots of other goodies) After that fiasco, and reading on the poor filtering performance I would never subject another vehicle I own to K&N.
Like I said, even if they were handing these things out on the street, no way.

This debate will never end. The just of it is that the Foam guys are lying, the cotton wont ruin your engine. And the cotton guys are lying, there isnt all the much of a difference in the flow.
Use whichever you want, but I've found the cotton is better for sandy conditions (like dunes) and the Foam is better for wet conditions (Mud bogs, marshes) and areas with fine dust (like an MX track).
