I am about to do my first oil change at 10 hours, I inquired about using synthetic or a better known brand than yamalube. The dealer advised me not to because its not formulated correctly and will only last half as long??? Now I thought 10w 30 is 10w 30.. I understand I cant use energy conserving oils because of my wet clutch.. Anybody have any ideas?

go with what your manual recommends. Most advise petroleum based oils in 10w/30 or 40 depending on temp. extremes

Grizzjeeper I myself have had thoughts about getting something different, but the way I change mine it's cheaper just to use the yamalube 4 20w-40. Since the machine is not liquid cooled, I change about every other ride, and the filter on my second change. This is just insurance on my part. Oil is cheap compared to other problems. Each change with filter runs me around $11.00 small price for an expensive toy, and I know this is to the extreme. We play hard and have fun. A little TLC (preventive maintenance) goes along ways. The final drive and differential gets changed the same way. It might sound crazy to some folks but it is mine and that's the way I do it. Fondle the wife and pamper the Grizz, then everything is wet, slick and ready. LOL.......wife didn't think that was funny, but she knows its true.

I ran Castrol Syntec Blend in my 98 Big Bear and it shifted smoother than ever! I used 10w30 in the winter and 20w50 in the summer. I think if you check in the ATV Connection Tech Connection there is a good article about types of oils to use in ATV's.

Good Luck, Damguy

I did alot of oil research and for the money and the reputation I use 10/30 Valvoline Durablend. It's a synthetic blend. I have a wet clutch and haven't had any problems. My Wolv is air cooled and therefore, I feel a better oil is required. Synthetics cost too much for no longer than I leave the oil in it. I have changed mine 4 times in less than a year. Only 3 quarts = 6.00 and maybe 10 minutes of my time. Like Taz stated, it's cheap insurance.

Don't freak if you see aluminum shavings / glitter the first oil change, although this looks devistating, everyone I've spoke with sees this the first time.
