Default Warrior Sputters

I hope someone can save me troubleshooting time......I have a 1998 warrior that runs perfectly fine untill you get it a little wet, after you go through some puddles or sloppy mud is when the problem starts. It will idle fine but spits and sputters as soon as you give it some gas. It does exactly what my 2002 Warrior (bone stock)does when the Parking Brake is on. I know there is a plunger button to limit the spark when the Parking brake is on , but the 1998 that is having the problem has had the clutch/park brake lever replaced (how I bought it,used)and the parking brake mechanism has been removed and a block plate installed. The wire with the plunger that should be attached to the clutch/pb lever is just stuck down by the headlights attached to nothing....the plunger moves in and out ok, and doesn't seem rusted etc...
could this plunger switch being exposed cause this problem when it gets wet...??? or could it have something to do with the Stator...????
