I can understand going to the 686 to unshrowd the valves. But dont you think going past that is mostly just a marketing thing? I keep seeing people talk about 720s, 740s, and now even 800s. Honestly, how can more ccs help all that much when your still working with a single? Cant you get enough power out of a 660 or 686 to make it a time bomb? If you cant, something is going wrong somewhere.

Dude, that question just doesn't make sense. That is like asking why someone would build a 427ci bored and stroked small block chevy when they could just use a 327.

You can build a 500hp 327, but it will be a high strung, high revving time bomb. You can build a 500hp 427 that will have tons more torque than the 302 and be bulletproof. The 427 would be easier to drive on the street and last twice as long.

You can get enough power out of a stock bore stock compression engine to make it a time bomb, just add a 40 shot of nitrous. Size doesn't matter. Size doesn't equal destruction. It all depends on components, build quality, and tuning.

Would the 427 be bullet proof if you were still using the stock crank, tranny, block, and head from the 302. Now lets pretend that both get unreliable at the same hp level. Hmm... how does the 427 come out being better now?
