Extremely Hot 500 auto???
#1
While I was breaking in my new TRV it felt like the engine was extremely hot at times, so hot that I had to lift my leg away from the engine area at times. Is this normal? What is the operating temp. for these engines? Can I get a higher flow thermostat for it?
I also ride in Souther AZ where it is routinely 100+ degrees so are there any special steps I can take to cool it down?

Arctic cat run hotter than other atv's it's normal. But if you want it to cool better i would by an overide switch to the fan so that it can turn on right when your leg catches on fire. Don't worry it's only going to be a first degree burn, A little Ointment will be a easy heal..LOL

My 2003 TRV ran a little warm until it got broken in at about 200-300 miles. I run the AC synthetic and I have not had to think about the fan override switch yet. But I know a few people who like the fan switch for going through deep water.
Get it broke in and get synthetic oil in it. I noticed it running a little cooler after the seconf synthetic oil change. If you are riding it at a high altitude your jetting might off a little as well. Check your plug color because if its rich it may run a littler hotter.
I have about 1200miles total on my TRV and love it. 500 of those miles are towing a trailer up and down a loose gravel beach loaded. (someetimes WAY overloaded). No problems. Enjoy.

There are several coolant addatives that will increase the efficiency of your cooling system, Purple Ice, Water Wetter, I can't remember the others. A local NAPA or other auto store should have something. A lot of these will lower coolant temp by up to 50 degrees. Highlifter has a heat fighter kit for most utilities, and LEAN, not rich jetting will cause overheating, make sure the plug is a nice tan color, a little rich won't hurt for break in, but a white plug could be a sign of jetting or carb problems that need fixing right away. A new engine is tight, so some extra heat is expected, and you living in a hot area makes it warm right off the bat.
