DIY 686, is it a reality?
#1
Ok I am looking to step up the power on my rappy again, my budget is not bad but not great either. I was looking at an 11:1 JE 102mm piston, carillo rod, stage two hot cam with springs. here are my dilema's........
What else do I need to buy for a good 686 conversion?
Do I need to do anything with my carbs or valves or can I leave them alone?
I live near Philidelpia, where is the best place to get my head porting and bore work done?
What is a good price on getting the porting and bore work done?
If anyone has done this conversion themselves I would love to hear how it turned out.

The real pricy thing is haveing the new rod installed and balanced. Everything else is pretty easy. Porting is around $400 and up and boring to 686 is around $40. Unless your going to full drag the bike the stock carbs will work fine. The last thing I'd do would be a raptor adaptor that bolts 2 banshee K&N with all of that and GOOD tuning you will have a fast bike.

I built mine all for under 1100.00 I got some good deals, and was hooked up on the porting, but it is not hard to do at all, like pat said the biggest chore you will have is the rod. I didnt do mine and wont unless the thing grenades, just dont want to mess with it. do a search on DWC 686 and you can get the details.. good luck and take your time.

I haven't instlled the 686 in mine yet, so I don't hold me to it, but do a search on the JE pistons. I've seen a lot of bad things on here about them cracking and getting holes in them. I've heard good about the Ross and also about the Wiseco (But heard they were expensive). Might want to look into that before you start forking out the money and have to kick yourself later. And the rod is not hard, you just don't the access to change it because it has to be balanced afterwards.

Finally found a local small bike shop to do the porting for $350 and they can do the rod change too, went with a 10.75:1 JE piston in the end and now my only dilema is what jets to run and what cam and valves to put back in it.... Any ideas?

I would be sure that they know what they are doing. Your rod, crank, and piston need to be rebalanced when you change the rod. Don't let them just stick it on there and thats it.
