Default Big Bear maintenece questions

dumb question following:
how?? like jack the quad up and wiggle the wheel and see if there is any slop? or do you take the wheel off and look at the bearings?
im also thinking of changing the rear brakes, because the seem really soft, i hit the brakes and it just slows down the quad, but fi it hit the front it will lock up the wheels, and i realise that the fornt DO do about 80% of braking but i think the rear should lock up the wheels too
