problems going from GYT-R to K&N air filter on Raptor
#1
Here's the situation:
This spring I installed the GYT-R jet kit, removed the air box lid, and installed a GYT-R air filter. I loved it. My friends said that it was the best tuned 4-stroke they had ever ridden.
About a month ago my GYT-R air filter ripped at the clamp. So, I decided to give the K&N a shot. (I was led to believe that the K&N is a better filter in every way.) But, my Raptor feels slower. Here are the symptoms:
- Starts up fine.
- Seems to run better than the GYT-R until the engine is warmed.
- Once the engine is warm, it has trouble idling (wants to die).
- I can smell gas after riding it hard (I haven't had time to pull the spark plug yet).
- Low end is weak. Mid range seems slightly slower. Top end seems fine.
Has anyone else expericenced this? Is the GYT-R better than the K&N? Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

The GYTR is a foam filter. The K&N is a cotton mesh filter. K&N's flow much more air than a foam filter and your jetting will have to be adjusted to accomodate this extra influx of air. Check your plug to get an idea of where your jetting is.

I thought I should also note that among the different air filters ( those consisting of paper, foam and oiled cotton gauze), foam flows the least while cotton gauze (K&N) flows the most (half again). Once you have your bike jetted properly for the K&N you should see a noticeable gain in performance.
