Another bad day for my 400L Sport.

If this thing keeps breaking on me I dont know what I;ll do. I have been having this slight shuttering feeling on take off. I tried new buttons in the back clutch. I put in the nice ones from HPD. I got a new Oringed chain and tensioner. I called HPD for some insight. They seem to think that my internal chain drive in my trans is starting to go bad. He said it could slip on take off and go away when you get moving because of less stress and torque. It's a cheep chain to fix. But I have to pull the trans. That don't sound easy. I also inquired on a rebuild. It seems that for my bike being a 97 it might need that done as well. However it starts and runs well. I will have to do a compression check.
He told me how to check the chain slack in the trans. I took the cover off. I chalked the back tire and took a measurement from onw of the splins on the back clutch. He said 1/4-3/8 of and inch play is normal, and 3/4-1 in is bad. I am at 7/8's. I am now scared to ride. I don't want the chain to pop and crack my case.
Myabe I should cut my losses and get a new YZF 450 0r a pred 500.

Ryank, when you talk about a rebuild, is it for the transmission, engine or both? We had the transmission on our '94 400L rebuilt and it was about $$350-$400. If that's the only thing wrong, take it to a reputable mechanic and have him look at it. He might charge you to diagnose it, but, if no other problems are found, then $400 is alot better the $5,000 plus for a new one, unless that's what you really want to do. JMO

I was talking about the motor.
I have done so much to this thing since I bought it almost a year ago.
New brakes, a-arm busings, all new steering bushings, 1 used left strut, shock, spring from a 99. longer travel than my 97, then bough a new set to replace the right side.
New clutch buttons, 2 belt, new rear tires. new battery, front sprocket, oringed chain, chain tensioner
Things it needs now
New inner and out clutch cover. Mine is now trashed. You can see where the belt rubs the case, and you can see where the front clutch has wore its way through. New trans chain. hopefully it will get rid of the bumping feeling off the start.
I want to add a pipe, filter jet kit, spring kit. Every time I set aside some money to play with something elso brakes.

If you think your quad is bad, go buy a new snowmobile for 7-8 grand (10 for that smokin' hot new Mach Z), add a couple grand more for clothing, accessories and a trailer and then only get to ride it three times a year cause THERE AIN'T NO F'ING SNOW!

Like 95sport said, Welcome to the world of recreational sports. It does cost money to keep them running. You have done alot to your quad How are you on the regular maintenance? Maintenance does cut down on your cost to keep it up and running. Also depends on the type of rider you are

Well see thats the thing rescuedriver... I bought this thing from a frind really cheep. He did nothing to it but change the oil, and a belt when needed. I havent had it a year yet. So I havent even the chance to enjoy it but for about a month before stuff started to break.
I am looking at a new Raptor. I wanted the Pred. but it don't have reverse. I like that feature. I still havent rulled out the scrammy 500. I could use the 4wd. I just don't know how much it really helps. Its a toss up. I have a lot of hills and streams so I am leaning towards the Scrambler 500. By any chance are they any faster than my 2 stroke 400? I know the Raptor is.

Ryank, I don't know if the 500 is faster? If you posted the question, you'll probably get every answer under the sun Some of the argument can be it's 4 wheel drive, probably heavier, etc. Therefore, it will be slower. If you do a lot of technical riding, rocks, hills, water, mud, then 4x4 might be the way to go. I also like the Predator and a down side is no reverse. When I look again, it will be on my list to check out. Your on the right forum for help, do a search, maybe you can find some old threads to help you. Lt. Dan
