RCR Stage 1 kit for TrailBoss 325
#1
I know there are a few of you out there wondering about mods for the Trail Boss 325. I just installed the RCR Stage 1 kit and am ready to do a full review.
Kit includes: K&N air filter with instructions and parts on simple airbox mod, Primary clutch sping, Muffler, and jet.
Cost: $250 shipped
I did some very crude testing to see gains. I apologize as I do not have solid numbers, but I am not set up to do so.
I installed each item and then tested to identify what gave me the most performance gain. I ran my Boss to 30 MPH and set a mark. I ran 2 more times to be sure that mark was at 30MPH
Step 1: install K&N. No noticable gain
Step 2: Do air box mod. Slight change in engine sound. I hit my mark at 31 MPH on a 3 run average.
Step 3: Add primary clutch spring. Raised clutch engagement slightly, but still at a comfortable point that using it to do work would not become bothersome. Other then than a little nicer feel, not a big deal(comes together nicely, later with pipe) 31 MPH at mark
Step 4: Add muffler. Big gain on bottom end! To pull a wheelie before this I had to pull like heck and get my weight into it. With the pipe I was able to just sit way back and give a pull and up I was. I am no wheelie king, but my friend rode a nice 300 foot wheelie on his 2nd try. The low end throttle response and additional power really added the needed control to ride it out. Before the pipe there was no way he could do this. Time to mark on a 3 run average was 32 MPH.
Step 5: Change jet. This got rid of the backfiring I was getting and also smoothed out the top end and gave an overall better response.
Fit: Everything fit perfect!
Finish: Beutiful brushed alluminum muffler. You cut about a foot off the factory head pipe and attach what is about a 2 foot muffler. It fits and looks great.
Service: This is big. I called Rick last Thursday. He said he was going on his 1 vacation for the year for a week and I would not see my kit for about 2 weeks. No big deal I told him. The following Monday my kit arrives UPS. WHAT A SURPRISE!
Noise: It is louder of course, but has a real nice sound. Easy on the throttle and you should be able to do yard work without ticking off the neighbor. Hit the trottle and it really makes some noise! Still within an exceptable range in my opinion.
LOW end- A lot more power. Really notice a big gain from 0 to 20mph. Wheelies no problem! I wixh I would have set my original mark at 20 mph. I know I would have seen a much bigger increase in that range.
Midrange: a little more power, but much better throttle response then stock
Top end: Maybe 2 MPH more
Conclusion: Worth every penny for the low end power and the better trottle response. This kit is not going to give you the top end increase some may be looking for. In my opinion that is OK. This is called stage 1 for a reason. It is getting the most out of the factory engine with bolt on parts. Step two is to get the 414 big bore kit whick costs another $400 and and the Hi perf cam shaft for $125. That will give you the top end increase and gobs more power throughout. To fellow Trail Boss 325 owner I say you can not go wrong with this kit. my next step is the 414 boring with JE Piston and Cam shaft. Add it up $3400 for the TB $875 for Stage 1 and 414 kit. For $4275 you have a rippen 400 class machine.

Everthing in the kit would be no problem except for the fit of the pipe. As long as Rick has access to a 325 Mag I would think he could make it work for you. Having the weight and shaft disadvantage over the Trail Boss, you may want to consider the 414 CC bore for $400. This may give you a lot more performance then the stage one kit for $150 more. Talk to Rick, he will help you out.

WWW.rittercycle.com. It does not cover the 325 products very well. Your best bet is to get Rick's number from this site and give him a call.

I ordered my 414 kit and High perf cam shaft today from RCR. I will give a full review when I have it installed. That pretty much wraps up any mods I will do. Maybe some carb work (rcr boring?) if Rick thinks it pays. Maybe some Alum wheels. Anyway as I said, I will let you know how it works.
