Does Honda set their speedos too high?
#1
The fastest I've driven my Foreman is 53 mph. I've hit this speed twice on the Foremans factory speedo. Recently, I've purchased a GPS unit that shows that the Foremans speedo is set around 3 mph too fast. So the real top speed is closer to 49 or 50 mph. This kind a ticks me off. The speedo throws off the mileage I thought I was going. I think my mileage shows an extra 340+ miles that I've never driven. This also throws off the maintenance schedule. It also makes the resale value go down because of excess mileage never driven. (Side note: My GPS is exactly the same as my car.)
I've seen so many threads that state the Foremans top speed as being similar to mine. Why are so many quads off? Does Honda try to compensate for a lack of top speed by setting the speedos high?
This isn't really a top speed issue. I'm just pissed because the stock speedo is just really wrong.
One funny thing is that I thought I was driving about 10 miles a short trip. Now I find out that I'm really driving much less.

All speedo's are slightly off. If it was a certifed calabraited speedo then it would be correct. Im sure it isnt stamped certified calabraited on the speedo. Some cars and trucks have this on their insturment panel. Even Police radar is off +or_ 1 mph. And it is still legal and ok in court to use the radar as long as it is only off by plus or minus one mph. Civilian GPS isnt ecactly accurate either. If you take two of the same GPS units and hold them side by side they will give you slightly different coridnates at times.
Sorry for all the typos, and I hope this makes you feel a little better.

me and my buddy have the gps on our new rubicons and we have set them both at the same time and place and thay dont go of at the same place but there very close.
by maybe 10 or 15 feet.
and as for the speedo being out well i put taller tires on my honda and the speedo reads slow by a couple of mph so now it must be just about right on.

I went for a ride today and hit 55 mph (twice) on the Foremans speedo. The rev limiter or something was holding it back. I could feel it kick in and I had plenty of space to go faster. Today, while at 54 mph on the Foremans speedo, my GPS said 52 mph.
Mudblaster- Does your Rubi speedo differ from your GPS? (mph) Before or after the larger tires?

I have 2 - 400 ATs and they both always read indentical mileages on rides - so they are consistant. But they are consistantly higher than actual compared to my GPS readings.
I found that the ATs register about 10.65 miles for each actual 10 miles run. That is 6.5% higher than actual on mileage and speed
So if I were to show a speed of 55 MPH - it would really actually be about 51.6 MPH

Jokerguy- I was looking at your pictures. Does your Garmin GPS mount right on the lower bar part of the handle bars? I bought the eTrex and the mount goes around the handle bar. Then a replacement battery cover slides into the part that goes around the bars. Well anyway, your pictures look good.
