POLL >> ES Shifter Problems ...

Hi ..
I just see too often problems about the ES Shifter ......
I wonder who have problems and which brand of Quad, and how many times they have problems . ..
I'm just curious to see what year and what brand is the most prone to problems . . .
I have a Foreman 450 ES 1998, had 1 problem, and easily solved . ..
A loose Main fuse in the electrical system.

Everyone seems very concerned about the electronic shift program on the hondas, but yet seems perfectly comfortable with a rubberband powering their atv. I guess I dont understand it.
I had and 01 Rancher ES 4x4 that got beat to hell and worked to death everytime it was turned on and all I ever had to do to it was change the oil, put gas in, and replace a choke cable.
BTW, belt drive owners, keep your cool. I have a kawi P700 too.

I have a 2004 Foreman ES. Not a lot of miles yet. I have been through deep water and lots of mud. Never had a problem at all. I like the ES and would get another one any time. Lots of folks dont see the big deal with push button shifting, but I have tried both and I find that having the controls at my finger tip is much nicer. I have had so much mud piled up on my feet that I could not move them much less try to shift.

We have a 2001 Rubicon, 4500 miles. Our 02 Rancher 4X4 ES has 1200 miles. That makes a total of 5700 100% trouble free miles and over 650 hours of 100% trouble free riding enjoyment.
This is what we expected from Honda and that is what they delivered. The wings were a bonus.

There is nothing better than finding out others have suffered the same problems as you, and it is even better when you learn how they fixed it. .
1. My wifes recon e/s stopped shifting in the spring of 2003. angle sensor replaced and honda covered it even after the 6 month warrenty. have 1500 miles later and not one problem.
2. My rubicon closing in on 2000 miles stopped shifting one time. My fault. when installing jet kit and I unhooked the wires and throttle cable etc.... It clearly stated in the rubicon manual to go through the reset procedure if any of those items had been removed. And I did not do it and it messed up.
However after reseting I have never had a problem since and that has been well over a year ago.

With about 1,000 miles each, neither of my 03 Rancher ES have had any problems.
We were out about 40 miles from the main road one day when we came upon a couple whose 4x4 pickup was buried in mud. We gave them a ride back to our camp on the Ranchers. I'm 6' 2" - 250 lb, and by the guy riding on the back was nearly the same size. After we got settled on the Rancher, there was no way in hell that I could get to the toe shift! Thankfully, I let my thumb do all the work.
Without a doubt and without any hesitation I would get another ES.

I've had no problems with the ES on my 01 Rancher 4x4. I did have a problem with our 03 Recon ES when it was new and discovered a loose wire on the 2nd day we rode it. After tightening it up, we have never had any problems for the last 18 months.

I've seen more than one similar thread questioning the reliability of Honda's ES technology. Although a few people really seem to "have it in" for electric shift vs. manual, It seems most people have had pretty good luck with ES. As a tech at a dealership, we do see occasional problems, but they are nearly always relatively easy and economical to fix. I'd say overall it works quite well.
