LOL! I hate it when people make remarks like that, because you obviously havnt spent alot of time on a belt-driven machine....
We have had our foreman es for a while now and with 3200mi we have only had minor problems with the electronic shifting...They where not easy miles, either.
Thats one of the problems with internet forums, people are always way too quick to jump on someone else's case before thinking it out ahead of time.

None of the rest of your post has anything to do with the comment ''yet seems perfectly comfortable with a rubberband powering their atv. ''
Your bashing machines you most likely have not spent much time riding.

Cant you read?

Don't contest my experience. You have no clue how much time I spend on atv's, or doing anything else for that matter.

Well, after talking to Honda Corporate about my ES problem, they said it sounded strange and to take them in to the local shop, the local shop confirmed my hunch and the comments on this forum about the problem, the shop said it was a common problem that no one wants to acknowledge or talk about.
So, my shop called the Honda Tech line for repair shops and confirmed the trouble code "3" blinking on the first gear light, "code 3" is for the shift angle sensor, Honda Tech line stated that the three were in a sequence of VINs that had be found to have a problem with the shift angle sensor, so they are going to replace them under warranty as well as cover the labor, the fourth that I was having problems with is a trouble code for the shift controller on the bars; they are going to cover the parts, but not the labor so my shop is going to help me out on that!

"Point of the post" - The problem with the ES is a REAL problem, there may be a few that have the problem because of a loose connection or some other reason, you may be able to charge the battery to help the problem, but the fact remains, "THE ES HAS PROBLEMS AND HONDA DOES KNOW ABOUT IT" they just don't want to admit it to the public!

If you have a problem with the ES on your Honda, call Honda Corp and tell them, they really do want to keep the Honda name as a symbol of quality products, even if your Honda is 2 years old and not covered under warranty! they should help! if not, POST YOUR STORY!!!

Keep it safe and fun , and keep it positive!

I have a Foreman 450 ES 1998, had 1 problem, and easily solved . ..
A loose Main fuse in the electrical system.
I have a 04 Foreman 450 ES and have recently experienced the shifter not working properly. I can run up through the gears and then the gear light starts flashing and shifting up or down no longer works. Ive read it could be a fuse or sensor of some sort, If any one has any more detailed info on this issue could you please reply! Thank You!

I had and 01 Rancher ES 4x4 that got beat to hell and worked to death everytime it was turned on and all I ever had to do to it was change the oil, put gas in, and replace a choke cable.

BTW, belt drive owners, keep your cool. I have a kawi P700 too.
to say it's a "rubber band" is kind of a gross statement. Drive belts are multiple layers of nylon (or synthetic) fiber and compounds- comparing a drive belt to a rubber band is like comparing carbon fiber to plastic wrap

BTW- many auto makers are going to cvt. Like the Ford crossover "freestyle" which has an AWD cvt tranny-

I've had one issue with my 650 rincon ES- it seems to hold in second when I push the up shift button in manual shift mode. I also had 3rd gear slipping back into second- but since I changed from walmart synthetic oil to genuine honda, this has been less of a problem... for now.

I believe they are refering to ES models like the rancher es and foreman es, not the ATs like the rancher at, rubicon or rincon.

i refer to belts as rubber bands too

Ill bet those new cars use the same kind of rubber band as atvs

wow, a 6 year old thread

isn't the ES (electric shift) on a rincon the same as the ES on a rancher? I believe I recall having this discussion with a motorcycle mechanic a while back and I was told the es program and parts are the exact same.

The belts on cvt driven cars / trucks are 3 times the size as those belts found on atv's- the clutch is a lot more sophisticated also.

the trans in the rancher and foreman are mechanical gear transmissions shifted by a solenoid, nothing like the auto trans in the others

The rincon tranny has mechanical gears shifted by solenoids as well- just has less gears- 3 forward / one reverse or auto. I use the ES to up shift or down shift when in esp mode- when it's in auto mode, it just uses motor rpm to shift like an automobile does.

I believe the ES system is the same in the foreman and the rincon, the tranny is just geared different. I could be wrong, but that's what I always thought...
