HELP!!! 400EX Wont start
#1
Heres the deal, I started the bike up, warmed it up went to work, idle it down, shut it down. Came back about 3 hours later and it would not start.
I changed the plug, which was a brown bronze color, (lean??) then tried to start again. No go. I have spark and pulled the new plug and it smells like fuel. How strong of spark is there? and could my timming chain jumped a tooth and got the bike out of time. ( the reason for the timming chain question is because I get a loud ticking sound when the bike is warmed up. and just had a Hot Cam installed.)
I turned the crankcase like I was going to adjust the valves and the rocker arms moved freely and the piston was at TDC.
What about the switch for turnnig it on and off. Is there a way to bypass it and see if that is the problem. I do not have much tools to get really into it, but do have the basic.
Help please, before I send the bike to the shop, which cost me about $400.00 to fly to Anchorage.

I couldnt tell you, but it could be a lot of things...loose connection on the battery, bad spark plug, maybe even the solenoid, but that doesnt quite make sense that you left for 3 mins and it wouldnt start again...my 300ex would do the stupidist crap..youd move a wire, itd start..then you move it again it wouldnt start, you move another wire then it works..it was all screwed up, thats what i get for spendin 200 on it...anyway, your starter is fine isnt it? That just doesnt make sense

YEs the starter does turn, I even draind the battery trying start it. THen charged it back up. Still no fire. Checked all the wires for loose connections, burrs and frayes and cuts, nothing. The only thing I can think of is the timming chaind jumped.

Seems like the only logical thing...damn man, sorry to hear that...my buddy said when his timing chain went out he still managed to push start it some how...I dunno, sorry man, best of luck

i would make sure the run switch is on, the choke is in the proper condition, fuel is in the tank, and the gas is on.

Well sometimes you have to look at the simple things.
I pulled started it with my Chevy and it started and started screaming. The throttle cable is binding somehow and keeping the throttle linkage open. You can hit the throttle and it feels ok, but on the carb. the roller that the cable goes on is not comming all the way back. Maybe the spring or the cable. The cable is a little thrashed on the outside before it goes into the thumb compartment. Tried to adjust it, but did no good.
Thanks again
