For a trail machine I don't think you can do much better than a 400ex.

Keep it maintained and these machines have no problems.

Both rock solid honda quads, both preform well for there size. The only thing that ever really goes wrong with them is axle bearings, just get a twin rowed carrier or replace bearings every other season. After you do it once it takes about 30 min to do. I got my 300ex before the 400ex's came out in 98, I realize alot of people think it is an underpowered quad, for a 20 yr old, but after 7 years of kicking the crap out of it, I must say she'll still put a big smile on my face. Just to much value to me, you know. Go with what you need, if you are a big rider I would look at the 400ex or the trx450r, but if you absolutly need reverse 300ex has you covered and although it is slower still a very dependable pretty quick 4 stroke, that will out run the magority of utility quads 500cc and under.

Good luck

These two machines (and the old Honda 300 utility), are the most solid machines ever built. If I have to ride 50 miles in the middle of nowhere out in the desert to get back to the truck, there is no other machine in the world I would rather be on then my 400! The 400 has won Baja a bunch of times.

That is what the 400ex was designed for is Baja. The XR400 engine in a 250R frame. That combination has won more Bajas than any other quad, and until someone beats that, they got no room to talk. You get the Yahmmy,Kawa,Uki lovers that get on there and tell you how they suck and are slow. That is BS. Those others break alot quicker and are alot less reliable. That XR engine has been around for over twenty years. It is tried and true. Screw reverse, I want something I don't have to wrench on.

I would go with the 400ex. IF you want reverse no matter what, then go with the 300ex. I have never tried the 300ex, but I know for a fact (and everyone else here knows this) that the 400ex has so much more power. I was planning on getting a 300ex to at least stay close with my friend on his Warrior, but he ended up picking up a 400ex and I love driving it. Whenever I drive his 400ex I never have to use reverse.
