Default Winch talk

Just got my first ATV, a '11 700 Grizz and planning on doing some trail riding soon. First piece of equipment I'm adding is a winch and I'm needing some suggestions for something that would be good for my kind of riding but comes at a decent price. Usually I try to get quality stuff (Warn) but since I'm needing to conserve denero right now I figure this winch is something that (at least for me) doesn't have to be crazy great/expensive. Although I'd still like to get something that's decent quality and can pull well, in my middle age I hardly think I'll be voluntarily launching into any terrain that has the potential to get me too stuck...thus I doubt I'll be using the winch that often.

Anybody have a suggestion for a model that's decent quality for around say $300 bucks? Doesn't have to be built to be used time after time but quality does still count.

Thanks

All my ATVs had a Warn but I just bought a 350 Grizzly a year ago with a 2500lb "Viper" that seem to work OK. The free spool is stiff to pull out but it seems to have to much cable on it for its sized.

In that price range Viper is probably your best bet.

I would go too with Viper without sacrificing quality. Or take at look at Engo Winches:
E9000 9,000 lb. 12 Volt Electric Winch for less than $300, brother in law have one and is a work horse for almost two years now.

You guys can flame me but I've been using harbor freight for a winch for years.
It even has the remote. I use it for landscaping and pulling small trees out and it has never failed.
I have it mounted on a vise type hitch so I can move it to my truck or anything with a 2" receiver.
They have some 2500# winches on sale now and thinking of adding one to my Razor just in case.
Only thing I would probably change is the wire cable to a synthetic rope.
flame on!

I've had Warn winches on my quads and liked them. I've seen some Vipers and Superwinch out there too.

If it works it works. Nothing wrong with that. I have seen a lot of junk at Harbor Freight and some good things. I'll probably get tie down straps there if they have the heavy duty kind whenever I need them. I almost bought an air compressor there but I got a better one at Sears cheaper. It pays to shop around since they aren't always the cheapest.

If it gets the job done, then its good enough. Its a bit of a risk buying a cheap winch because many times the quality is a bit unknown. Its kinda the same as buying cheap tools. If you don't use them a lot, then they will definitely last. If you use them often like every day, then you'll quickly find out if they're good quality or not. Many less expensive winches do use quality parts just like the more expensive ones.
