I use Hondapro HP-1 10w40, and I haven't lost any oil yet. It used to use up oil but it quit when I switched to HP1 so I'd go to your dealer and try that out. And yeah whover posted after me that would be a much better idea

the oil tends to go from the tank to the crankcase if you let it sit for a long period of time...i would listen to 400exrider and let it run for a few before u check it......(as long as you knew there was oil in it and there isnt a gigantic puddle on the floor)

actually the 400ex is the hardest thing ever to check the oil in. you can check the oil where its sitt n and it will not show anything, and then roll it back 6 inches and it will show full. that is pretty stupid. honda is dumb, and i still cant get the fu*king axle nut off. ahhhhhhhhhhhh HONDA.

It's what Jeff and Tocky said. When these external oil tank bikes sit (Z400 does the same thing), the oil drains into the crankcase. Just start it for a couple of minutes (unless you have a 2 quart puddle of oil on the garage floor), and the oil pump will refill the tank. Then check the level.
I run Honda HP4 oil (a synth/petroleum blend), and highly recommend it.
