Uncles 500 sputters and/or dies
#1
Hi I don't have an AC but my uncle does and he's been having a problem...some of the time. Sometimes it sputters and won't go over 1/2 throttle sometimes it'll be running fine and just die, but it will start back up, sometimes it'll be fine then start cutting out so he'll shut it off and start it back up and it'll be fine for awhile, other times its just fine. He tookl it to the dealer and the dealer said he had a dirty carb and he cleaned it but it only lasted a day, then the dealer put a different carb on (off his bike) but it made no difference. He said it has something blocking the "secondary's". Whatever. anyway anyone else have these agrivations? I told him that when my DS was doing that it was the vent tube from the tank. Any Ideas? Thanks

I have a 2002 500i and its NEVER done that.
When troubleshooting something like this, the hardest problem is trying to determine if it's electrical or gas. I've read that ignition coils and even spark plugs can "act up" and cause simular symptoms. And I've read about pinched gas tank vent lines, gas tank feeder lines and carbs causing the same problem. I've even read a post about a gas valve that went bad, and it created simular symptoms. As soon as he put it on "R" setting, his engine worked great. Try to determine if its a gas or electrical problem, then narrow it down from there...
Good luck. And yes, I hate these weird type of problems as well.

Spike99 is right you need to determine if its a fuel problem or an electrical problem. If the dealer switched carbs and it still does it, then its not a carb problem. Fuel lines could be plugged, obstructed or pinched. The air vent tube or carborator vent tube could be piched or plugged as well.
I live where wet salt air corodes up unprotected connections in a matter of weeks.(not much of that in Nebraska but, if its and older bike possibly) So to rule out any electrical connections you might try getting a tube of dialectic grease ( grease specifically made for electrical connections) found at any auto parts store. Then find as many electrical connections as you possibly could, especially don't miss the spark plug, starter relay and battery and any ohter plug connections you can find cleaning and coating them with the stuff.
This would help to rule out a bad electrical connection. Then if the problem continues you could have bad electrical components most of which have specific, individual tests you or your dealer could perform.
Hang in there these kind of problems can be frustrating. I had a similar frustrating problem when the air vent tube for my TRV was pinched off next to the handle bars when the electrical wiring for my winch was installed by a dealer. Haven't had a problem since. (1200 miles later and counting)
