Default 400EX Motor Oil (what kind?)

I've been using Honda GN4 and I'm looking to something different. I don't think the GN4 is all that great. Its leaving this graphite looking stuff on my dip stick (what is this crap?). It seems like it bubbles up and don't stay clean very long. What do you guys use? I know a lot of you say you have good luck with Mobil 1 red cap but how about Mobil 1 MX4T? Does anyone use this stuff in the 400EX? Is it worth the $8 per qrt. price tag? I run the pi$$ outta this thing (can't help it) and need a good oil for maximum protection against a Thermal Neuclear Meltdown.....(whats the good stuff?)

many run the mobil 1 with the red cap because it is safe for our wet clutches. it doesn't contain any friction modifiers like the other synthetic oils mobil makes. i don't know anything about the mx4t though.

Ive heard that the Golden Spectro synthetic oil was the best...the guys at the dealer recommended it...its expensive but it seems to be holding up to whatever we throw at it

Do a search. There are a hundred posts (and a hundred different opinions!) on this subject.

Great article:

More than you wanted to know:

I run Honda HP4 (without moly), a synthetic/petroleum blend (GN4 is all petroleum). I figure there are a thousand oils out there, and all that means is that you have a thousand chances of getting the WRONG ONE! Just use HP4 (which is what your owners manual recommends!). You payed thousands of dollars for your bike, so why whine about spending a couple of dollars extra on oil, to protect your big investment????

If i were to run full synth, I think I would pick Maxima Ultra. I have run GN4 in my autoclutch bikes (Honda does no recommend synth in autoclutch bikes) all along.

Oh, and that little bit of "graphite looking stuff" you find on your dipstick (particularly when the engine is cold), you will get that on any bike with any oil. I think it is just some very light stuff, that floats on the oil (so it never gets to the oil filter).

Amsoil 0W-40 four stroke is the way to go! It's a 100% pure synthetic oil unlike Mobil 1 which is a blend of synthetic and high quality dino oil. At about the same price Amsoil is a better value and much better protection for your ride.
