Durability of CV boots?
#1
Ok we love our 04.5 SP400, had it for about a month, already have 550 miles on it But most of that was just dirt roads and trails. Neighbor showed us some mud today. It is really amazing what these things can go through. We tried to get stuck but couldnt. Well anyways, one of the inside rear CV boots totally ripped in half, presumably sometime while they were under the mud. My question is how often do these tear under normal/ very muddy conditions? Also, we are having the dealer fix it, then picking up a service manual and a brushguard (friend wrapped the front of our 250 around a tree, not gonna happen to our 400 too). How hard are they to repair yourself? We know very little about atv's, but is it possible with a service manual to change the boot? Thanks

I have had only one tear on my Yamaha since new and I have torn(pin hole actually) one on a 700 Sportsman ~1500 miles. They shouldn't tear very often. It was a rear one and I was able to change it with a service manual. The hardest part was getting the CV apart and you will need some way to tighten the clamps that hold it on. you could probably do it in a day, or a few nights.

Hi
Do a search here for boot replacement and you will find all the help you need. Thats what I did. I have done 254 hours on mine now and only torn one boot. A stick did it I think. Make sure you don't let the mud dry around the boots otherwise it may tear into them. Replacing the rear ones isn't very hard, do a search. should only take a couple of hours max the first time. There is a circlip from memory that works the opposite to what you would think and without special tools I needed another set of hands to help put it all back together. Clean the bike well before you start as you don't want to get dirt in the CV and repack it with clean grease when putting it back together. It was 6 months ago I did mine so I cannot remember all the details the information is on this site, just a matter of finding it '
Good luck
