ok, i own a 330 polaris magnum 2004 400 miles. afraid of it due to engine braking. if i get the mod. of engine braking i hear that its only rear wheel braking. can this be eficient. have pretty steep hills. ok i talked to the dealership yesterday and they would trade but i would lose about $1800 on the magnum. the trade could be for a 2004 450 kodiak,2004 sportsman500, or 2004 sportsman600. All within $40 of each other. So i would wind up paying about $7500 for a 4 wheeler after being upside down. Am i nuts. wish i had done my research before i bought the magnum. the costs of engine braking is about $450 installed. someone set me straight i can take it

If I was you I would try to sell on Ebay and local papers before you trade it in. Trading in is a joke, its the last resort if you absolutely cant sell it on your own. If they tell you that they are giving you $4000 on a trade, they are taking that price off the sticker of a new ATV.. you have roughly $500-$1000 to play with on a sticker, so a dealer will pocket that money etc.
From your other choices it looks like you are looking at big-bore ATVs.. so maybe you arent happy with the 330's power.
If it was me, I would sell the Polaris, then look at the Kawasaki 650/700 Suzuki Twin Peaks 700, or wait for the King Quad 700.
Get out of the Polaris business, there is alot more choices out there and will give you many years of enjoyment.
PS. I remember wishing that my Suzuki 125 Quadrunner had brakes, I wore them out one summer and didnt get new ones for 2 years.
No suspension whatsoever on that thing either.. We get spoiled with IRS, disc brakes, and engine braking.....I think we forget about the old days.

well it doesnt have to be a big atv. my major concern is safety for my 19 year son and here in eastern ky there is some steep hills. engine braking is the biggest concern. there only wanting to give me $3000 for my magnum. its in perfect condition. they said something about wholesale price. thanks

Personally i would go with the Sportsman 500 or 600. Both are great ATVs. Independant Rear Suspension will give you a smoother ride over rough terrain. My dad just bought a Sportsman 600 and loves it. It has much more power than you would expect, its almost impossible to get stuck and brakes havent been an issue.

well after careful consideration i guess i will keep my polaris and put on the engine braking. i guess i just chaulk it up to a lesson learned. anybody needs to do there homework. i rode it today and it does ride and run good. i just couldnt see losing $1800 on a atv with 400 miles and 5 months old. i also have a 2003 kodiak so i will ride it when i will be going down steep inclines. thanks
