Default WaterPump Mechanical Seal

My son has an 02' SP500 that has coolant leaking from the "weep hole". The dealer says that the mechanical seal in the water pump needs replaced. The seal is $34.99 and they want $60.00 labor to replace it. Has anyone replaced one of these seals? Any special tools needed? One dealer says that you need a special tool and another dealer says that " no" special tools are needed. We are thinking about doing it ourselves but I don't want to get in there and find that I need any type of tool that I don't have.

You don't need any special tools, just take your time in doing the job.You will have to remove the floorboard and drain the cooling system. It's also a good idea to change the impeller oil seal while your in there. The easiest way I have found to do it was to knock a small hole in the metal band/seal and pry/tear the seal apart to get it out.The shaft that goes through the seal does NOT come out so be careful on how you get the seal out.To put back in you need a socket the same size as the seal and just drive it in.It will stop on it's own because of the lip on the seal.Hope this helps.
