Ported intake
#1
I ported my intake, I am about to put it in for a test run. I removed the bump inside, and enlarged the intake a bit. I left it pretty rough, just used a small grindstone bit on the dremmell to finish it up. I am wondering just how rough or smooth this thing is supposed to be in the end. I will probibly put this thing in and take it out several times trying several combos. If anyone has any questions they have been wondering, ask me and I'll try to do it and test it for you. I want this experience to help all of us be able to do something like this. Like I said, my only question to you guys is the ballpark guess on how rough it needs to be. Thanks and hope to learn from this.

After my test, I figure rough is good. I know smooth is bad, causes too much friction in the intake for the air passing through. Roughened up a bit, it permits "pockets" of air to become "trapped" along the sides of the intake therefore reducing the friction for the remaining air to pass through. Also, the roughness aids atomization of ate air and fuel.
With my ported intake, it now starts much easier, idles smoother, and uber power. LOL I'd agree with everyone else this is a must have mod, and it's easy to do yourself with the right tools and ample time. Just don't rush.

I'm fairly new to the atv world, but I've modded several high end sports cars. Now in theory the way it works is the more air flowing in and out of the engine, with the right mixture, the more hp you have. Normally you want the intake as smooth as possible to create less friction and more air flow. Again, maybe it's different on an atv, but I wouldn't think so.

I do belive you would want the intake tracks smooth for a certian fuel injection motors ( i could be wrong) cause there is no fuel passing through the intake trac just air. but the reason for some texture on the DS intake is to assist the fuel atomizing as it passes through the intake. some here smothed the intake and couldnt get there quad to start, rough it up a little and started fine.
