Wolverine low oil engine siezure
#1
I just walked back from a ride where my Wolverine stopped running due to oil loss from a damaged oil cooler. It seemed to momentarily seize when it stopped running. Not knowing it was an oil leak, I pulled it over by hand a few times and thought it was not siezed or too tight. So I ran it again and it stopped in less than a minute. Then I noticed the damaged oil cooler and oil soaked chassis. My plan is to replace the oil cooler and refill the crank case then ride it home. My question is do you think there will be any engine damage from this problem?

I would think the engine would be fine since there is a low oil shut off on the machine. Just curious how did the oil cooler get damaged? I just bought an 04 Wolverine too. Did you damage it from a crash or did it just go bad?

The oil cooler must have been damaged by a tree limb. There are alot of downed trees and dead fall where I ride (NE B.C.). I think this kind of trouble can be considered a freak accident (although I have heard about this kind of thing before with the Wolverine).
Thanks for the info. I was wondering if the engine did indeed have a low oil cut-off. Whew!
I really like my Wolverine. They're a great little machine. About the only other detraction I can mention is the lack of mud protection from the stock fenders. I get covered - so does the machine!

Yeah most of the 4-stroke quads out there have a low-oil shutoff on them just so yoou don't fry the motors. My friends 1990 Warrior eats oil like crazy and i was riding it as hard as i could one day and it just quit and i was freaking out becuz i thought i fried the motor but it just turned out that it was low on oil

I called a local dealer and got quite a shock when I found out Yamaha wanted $400CDN for a new oil cooler. Not wanting to pay that much for a new cooler that I figured was frankly, redundant way up here in the great white north, I had a local fab make a replacement cooler from a piece of 1' square aluminum tubing. For as warm as it gets up here, its probably more than enough to keep the motor cool. Its still parked in the bush waiting for me to reinstall the oil cooler. Will update this thread once its back up and running.

I installed a fabricated aluminum oil cooler today, refilled the bike and went for a ride. No oil leaks and the bike ran acceptably cool. Of course the temperature was a cool 57F... On the up side the new oil cooler is unbreakable compared to the stock unit. And only 1/4 the cost.
