Default ground off head mount? is that normal?

i bought that engine off ebay and the guy emailed me with this
"the top motor mount has been ground off the head and the mount cut off the frame"
said he forgot to mention it...
ive never pulled a ds engine before is this common practice to cut?
i had heard of people griding stuff down a bit...but is he saying the top engine mount is GONE?

any help is appreciated

yes that means the engine mount is gone, and that sucks. forgot to mention that? yeah okay...

if you remove the head with the engine still in the bike, the engine mount on the back of the head will catch on the cross frame and prevent removal. all you have to do is pry the head forward so it will clear - the studs flex plenty enough to accomidate this and the practice of prying it forward hurts nothing. some people do not want to pry it, so they remove all but one engine mount bolt and simply tilt the engine forward for clearance of the mount on the head.

but cutting it off entirely, well lots of people have done it, but it is absolutely not necesary, and to remove it completely weakens the integrity of the frame in a rollover on a nasty hill. all the engine mounts all the way around use the engine to strengthen the frame's integrity, removing the upper mount compromises this.

so does that mean the engine mount on the engine itself is gone? (so say if i put it in my quad there would be no way to have the top bolted in?) i assume that that is what he meant (otherwise it wouldnt make any sense to mention it huh....

if it were you would you still go through with it?

i thought it was odd he cut it....ive never taken an engine out but even I know that most just loosen the mounts and tilt the engine forward to get top access right?

let me know what you think about the deal (maybe i should try to get it cheaper as that is kind of a big deal?)

i dont even have my ds to look at it...but what part of the head has the mount on it? what would that part cost to get replaced?

thanks for the help man

the cylinder head is what the mount is part of, it wouldnt be worth replacing the cylinder head for that. Buy I would definetly try to get it cheaper. kyle

I would be asking for a full refund. That is too big of a omission.

well i havnt paid for it yet....

how common is this done on the DS? (i just dont understand why you would start cutting when all that is needed is to loosen the other mounts???)

my concern would be if he failed to mention an externally visable "hack".....what else is he forgetting to tell you about??

I would buy a good "deal ds650" that I can test drive, and then part out the pieces I don't want, rather then buy an unknown motor off of ebay. Although, I got an R1 kit motor in the garage I bought off of ebay and have never heard it run.

well the MAIN reason i bought it, was to steal a few parts out of it. (clutch sprag and starter gear) that were going to cost me 400 dollars new (damn bomb oem parts!)

so i figured steal parts out of this and for 200 dollars i have the rest of the engine....

i had played with the idea of swapping engines, and even possible building somthing out of it (like a go cart/buggy) but that kinda kills that idea....

i still dont understand why in the world you would want to GRIND OFF a piece of important structural integrity when all you needed to do was loosen some bolts and tilt the motor forward?
he said the engien has about 25 hours on it (3 since the woods piston was put in)
i have always had a REALLY tough time convincing my parents about internet buying, and it seems every time i get into somthing expensive or somthing that seems cheap it backfires big time (im worried this would be one of them....get it here, open it up to find a burnt piston and metal flakes all over)

maybe i should just get it and part it out back on ebay....
i could probably get at least my 600 back.... (there is an intake/carb on there now for 50....and i could sell stuff like cluctch basket and disks out of there etc etc)

hmmm what to do

really lots of people have cut off that mount - duners, draggers, and the like. it really is an unecesary piece as far as operation goes. having it removed facilitates quicker and easier removal of the head by those guys that get into it a lot, albeits not necesary. the only disadvantage is strength in the event of a hardcore wreck on woods trails where the bike may roll a few times on the way down a nasty hill. the people who cut these mounts off do not ride such terrain so its no worry to them.

and guys that have undergone extreme weight reduction all over the bike have appreciated the couple pounds here being dropped too. I know what you're thinking, what's a couple pounds, but when you add up the couple pounds here and there and all over the place it quickly accumulates to 30 or 40 pounds, and to strict draggers and hillshooters this is top priority.
