2003 Scrambler 500 4x4 Transmisson ?
#1
The transmission went out of my cousin's 03 scrambler and he called to ask if I had any ideas on where to get a new one. While searching here in the forum I found all kind of horror stories about transmissions going out. And it seems POLARIS has made some changes over the years to try to resolve their problems. I have a 2000 400 and a 2002 500 so I am wondering what I can do to prevent future tranny problems in those models. Is the preventative maintenace or mods that will help strengthen the weak parts. Also back to the original question, anybody got an extra tranny that would fit a 2003?
Thanks

These trannys are really bullet proof if you take care of the maintanance. Most of the time trannys break because the chain breaks and takes out a case. The other most comman trouble is not letting the motor idle all the way down before shifting. But after lots of use the internal chain will stretch and cause some trouble. If I was your cousin I would get a manual pull the tranny out, take it apart and see what wrong with it.They arent that hard to work on.Takes more time to get them out than it does to fix them. The best insurance you can get for tranny life is chain tensioner and keep your chain adjusted.

The tranny is off the atv and in pieces. His primary problem is a cracked case, in addition there is damge to the internal gears. So it looks like it really going to be costly to repair. My concern is preventing this on both of my scramblers. I'll keep a close watch on chain tension. I read somewhere in the forum where the tranny mounts were weak on the older units. Any idea what year they were beefed up?
