High Intensity (HID) Headlight Bulbs
#1
I have a 98 Banshee with a re-wound Ricky Stator, stator and a 98 Polaris Sport 400.
My Banshee has 7" PIAA headlights. The headlights on both the Banshee and Sport 400 take H3 light bulbs.
I am thinking about installing those new "Blue Diamond HID" bulbs in both bikes.
I am thinking about putting a set of 55w bulbs on the Banshee and a single 100w bulb on the Sport 400.
I really like how they work on cars. They seem to put out a brighter light and are more visible at night.
Has anyone tried these bulbs on an ATV? Do they give you the blue'ish HID lighting effect like they do on cars?
Thanks!

Rob,
I had a "Diamond Blue" bulb on the Trailblazer as an experiment. Needless to say, it didn't work. The blue hues work best in the fog, not at night.
As for H.I.D. lights, if you have the money, go for it. It's my understanding that they are bacically an arc light. A transformer steps up the voltage and the sparks fly. The light they produce is somewhat less painful to look at than arc welding (also a bluish hue). I don't think they'll work on your Banshee though. The Banshee uses A.C. ( thanks Tesla!) and the Sport uses D.C.
You'd be better of trying either the Diamond Blue bulbs or the HID on the Sport.

Hey there I saw this done on a Blaster. Look at www.blastercentral.com it has the whole deal on converting to HID.
Good Luck

Mike,
I have standard 12v dc H3 bulbs (purchased at Pep Boys) in both the Banshee and Sport 400 and they work fine. I have 55w in the Banshee and 100w in the Sport 400.
Remember, I have aftermarket PIAA lights on the Banshee with a re-wound stator. With this in mind, do you think the Diamond Blue light bulbs will work?
I found the Diamond Blue bulbs in a JC Whitney catalog for $7.00 each, so I won't have much in them if I try it.
When you tried them in your Trailblazer, did you get much of a "blueish" tint or were they no different than the regular bulbs? I really like the look of the blue tint!
Also, have you tried putting a 100w bulb in your Trailblazer? I put one in my Sport 400 and it seems to work just fine.
Thanks!

Rob,
I've had a H-3 100 watt bulb in the Trailblazer for going on two years. I love it! It's nice and bright. It's easy to see Celeste when she is riding behind me.
The Diamond Blue bulbs are another story. Either I got one with too much blue, or that's the way it's supposed to be. I hated it. The light was too blue to see details at night. It seemed bright enough, but I just didn't like it.

It's great to hear from you again!
I just went to your website and your Sport 400 looks awesome!!
Who made the shock covers on your quads? I had a set made by Wildskins here in Mesa, AZ. Yours are very cool!
What was the deal with the Diamond Blue lightbulbs? Were they bright blue or just a dull light?
Tell me more about them...where did you get them, did they work...etc.
Thanks...

Rob,
in the pictures I had the Polaris shockwears on them. I've since switched to Outerwears. I had to use two of the rear shockwears on the front of my Sport due to the fact that I now have the long travel Works struts. The travel was so long, that it was pulling the Polaris shockwears out when my suspension topped out. I figure it has about 9"+ travel on the front now. Celeste re-did my page and moved it. The Hyperlink below will get you there.
I really didn't care for the bluish tint the bulb cast. It made it difficult to determine what was a rock or just leaves. Important stuff like that.

Rob,
Those bulbs are horrible.
Anything like that is more a poser bulb... and only for looks. It's actually less light.
If you try the PIAA Super White it's the better replacement. Or Hella makes a good bulb too.
If you want to run HID... which I know you weren't asking about in your question, you were just trying to get the look of HID. BUT... Alba used to make a stator that put out 260w for the banshee. It was $400 back in the day. I had that on my bansh... and I ran two 8" HID lights from Baja Designs. But I also had to run the battery kit they supplied. All in all... it was a $2000 light setup. But it sure was bright!!!
Nowadays you can get HID for cheaper, but not on a Banshee.
Buy a Bombardier, you can run HID all day long with no rework!!!
Also... One HID is about 35w draw. But puts out the light of a 300w halogen.
For the money.... ace the blueish bulbs and get yourself some HID! It's worth it!
