DS Guy's Opinion on the TRX450R ........
#1
We just picked up my buddies new TRX450R this Sat. morning. Very good looking bike in person. A little small for me, but not bad at all. Considering i'm 6'2/235lbs, that's pretty good actually. Very good handling bike, well balanced, very good brakes, it does not have a frontend lifting issue under full throttle, it is light though. Easy to start, transmission seems to shift smoothly. Headlight is a little dim' compared to my DS, but ok. I have not really jumped it at all. Where we were riding at is pretty flat terrain. Boring actually.
Now for the bad part, this thing is a terd down low. I mean a real terd. We were having trouble just making it turn around in the grass on level ground without lugging the motor to the point of stalling. Try to make it climb a small hill or mound at low speed in 1st gear, and you are all over the clutch, or you're gassin' it to make it pull smoothly up the hill. Once it's wound up, it runs great. So, i decided to yank the spark arrestor out, and i couldn't believe how badly this bike suffers from the stock exhaust. Now it pulls good down low, not great, but tons better than it was. It'll lug up small hills with ease now, and it needs much less clutching to trail ride it. I was getting a little worried that we made a mistake, but now, it feels good. Now, it runs more like a 4 stroke should. It still has a 2 stroke like powerband, only with more bottom end torque. That thing boogies pretty good. We have not raced my DS with his TRX, but soon. If i were a little smaller of a person, i probably would have got one for myself. But, i'm not. So i'll have to stick with the beast. Lol.

I think it looks like a cool looking quad more for everything not just the track like the yfz i have been hearing stuff about the 450rs swingarms cracking tho

Most 450R owners are dropping a tooth on the front sprocket. The factory gearing is a little high for the trails.
My brother just bought one last weekend. I'm planning to get some good back to back seat time between it and my Baja X in the next few weeks.

I've ridden both the 450R, and the YFZ, both had similar mods. The YFZ was just way more powerful, and the suspension felt great for a stock bike, even with my 265lbs on it. The 450R felt like a better 400EX to me. They are both excellent bikes, I can only imagine what we'll be seeing in the next few years....

I rode a guys piped YFZ at DS Days and I couldn't stand the ride. My arss was killing me after 5 minutes and my arms were still shaking when I got off. Definately not my cup of tea. I am not a huge guy either at 6ft 185lbs. I guess we are spoiled riding our Cadillacs

I agree...if I was still racing MX, then I would consider the YFZ.... I've owned alot of different quads, etc... so far the DS is my favorite... if Honda comes out with a 650 of some sort...I would definately be interested though.

I have rode both the yfz and the 450 R and for handling and comfort I'll stick with my X, as for power I really don't think there is that much differance between the 450 R and the X. Out the door I think you get more for your money with the X. One time when brand X comes out on top. Then agian I might be a little bias. he he Maybe I should do a comercial

allredbomber, once u drop a tooth on the front sprocket it wakes up the bottem end, the only real complaint i had was i thought the foot pegs were set a little to far back on the frame for a taller rider..my feet kept wanting to come off the pegs...

I heard that changing the front sprocket 1 tooth was like 5-6 teeth in the rear? Is this true, as i have never changed the gearing on the front sprocket before. But i know what a 4 tooth larger sprocket (ATC350X) in the rear feels like, and it's a big change. How much topend does the 450R lose when the front is changed to a 1 tooth smaller sprocket? Just curious. If it is as much as the 4 tooth larger (rear) i mentioned, i can't see my bud's 450R having much of a chance against my DS in a drag race. What do you guys think?
