+2+1 a-arms or just +1
#1
I have an '86 250r and race MX. I have stock length Laeger a-arms and am planning to get wider a-arms. I would get +2+1 BUT there is one problem. The guy that had it before me put a new -2 Lonestar swingarm on it? I have trouble getting off of the gate and keeping the front end down although once I get going, it hooks up great in the turns and it jumps fine. If I got +2+1 a-arms would that make my front end even lighter off of the gate, or should I just get +2 a-arms.
Also, any advice on coming off of the gate, it is my biggest weakness. Thanks.

get a longer swingarm and your R will hook up much better! If those laeger a arms will fit a 400Ex I'd buy them. I live about 15 minutes from morgantown near uniontown pa. where do you race? Hi point, pyramid and luzerne?

+2/+1 won't make your front end even lighter. If anything it will make it a little heavier due to the extra length. Also +1 forward will help the suspension geometry a little to give you better turning ability. If you race MX a lot i'd even go with +3 a-arms to give you that extra width and additional travel. The -2 rear swingarm is only -1 based on an 88 or 89'. About the only thing to get better starts would be to feather the clutch a lot and get up on the tank more.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Hey allnamesaretaken, I race at Pyramid and I raced the national at high point. I plan on racing a couple at Camelback this year too. I probably won't get my new a-arms until later in the winter. I am not sure if I will sell my old ones, but if I do I will let you know.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

First of all, a longer swingarm will not help your traction. It will however keep the front end down. My advice to you would be to keep the -2 swingarm and get +2/+1 a-arms. The extra inch forward will help to keep the front end down. However, I would say that a change in your body position at the start would help even more. With the -2 swingarm you can sit a little further forward without sacrificing traction for the rear wheels.

Thanks for the advice. It seems like I have been sitting as far forward as I can get and still work the clutch. But I am still learning a lot. If I just had a good place to practice my starts. My local track always has the start line closed during practice and dirt roads are too slick.
