Quandry about new BigHorn Radials
#1
Posted in tires, but...really, its about tires on a Prairie 650
Did my honest research. About a month looking, reading etc etc.
They arrived today and had them promptly mounted at wally world for 20.00. Not bad
They look very cool. The Bad Factor twice what the factory dunflops were. And twice the heft, twice as heavy I'd say as the dumdrops
They ride like theres rocks in them. They hook up acceleration better than the duplops. Stopping...??...I have to say a longer stop from 30mph with all locked up in the same grass strip, I overshot my "turn" twice on the first run.
They corner better, not sure how much yet. Only have 20 minutes on them
But the ride is hideous. Choppy, harsh, and dam near feels like a wobble at 25+. Is that the nature of tires like these? I was leaning to the BearClaws but went higher cause of "better" ride results. Granted the tread is three times that of the factory skids and theres tread on the sidewall, accounting for the desire to track in ruts.
Help would be appreciated-Could it be the tire pressure? Too high? Not mounted correctly? Torqued down wrong?
I'm running 6 in the front and 6.5 in the back
Thanks in advance-
CWG

I know they call for more air than a bias ply tire, but I'd take them down to 5psi. Make sure that the tires are fully seated out against the bead holders on the rims the whole way around. ATV tires are notoriously hard to get seated.
The last 2 sets I had mounted came back not fully seated. The tire mounting guy had to use 40-45lbs to get both Blackwaters and Bearclaws to pop, even then they didn't fully seat. I had to bring them home, put 40psi back in and beat them severely with a big hammer to fully seat them.
At the end of the day the Bighorns are much heavier and stiffer than the stockers, you can't get clear of that, just have to get used to it.

Thanks, I'll play with the pressure.
I'm wondering if they mount one way only..doesnt seem like it. They offer white letters out or in,still I'm looking at the lugs and theres a slight difference...
wondering if I should have had them spin balanced, not sure how a ATV tire could keep lead on it...

The NEW Big Horns should have a little yellow circle to line up with the valve steim, for better balance.
If you happend to get the old batch that doesnt have this, there are some without the yellow circles that are good, But after you try a few things and it still feels like they are out of ballance? you should call where ever you bought them from ASAP to get replacements! ANY good after-market supplier should be able to take care of you if thats the case. Make sure your tires are seated corectly? I change my tire pressure all the time, For rough conditions I like 6 to 7 psi in the front and 4 to 5 psi in the rear. ( 6.5 in the rear is way to hard unless you like to bull ride?-LOL) for soft terrain or wet conditions I'll run 3 to 4 psi in the front and 3 to 4 in the rear. 6 or more seems to be to hard for most, Your better off dropping it down in the 4 psi range and see if that feels better for you? The tires wont ride as soft as the stock or lighter weight radials, But after a while you should get use to it? By buying the Big Horns You just joined the Hard Core Club, and may have to come down to Pa. and ride with me?~lol
