What Gearing on 330 TRX
#1
Right now I use a 14 front sprocket and a 38 rear with a 22 inch tall Turf Tamer. This combo for trail riding is great, mostly attributed to the power of the motor, not the gearing. What happens is when I drag race, I run out of top end. What do you recommend I change my gearing to without sacrificing low end power for trail riding? I'm sure the tall tire helps my top end and gives me better traction at dead stops. Let me know what you think. Will I notice a big difference racing if I change to a 14/36 or a 15/37

where the hell are you drag racing? that gearing should take you over 80mph. id try a smaller rear before a 15 front, if that's even possible. the case saver i used for my 14 front is so thin i cant believe they make one for a 15 but i never looked into it to begin with.
asking for more top end without losing bottom end power is an oxymoron. you gotta give a little to get a little.

Here's the predicament: I usually go riding with my 2 buddies that have modded Quadzillas. We don't race each other in the trails, but when it comes time to line up for racing(straight line), I hang with them until about the time I hit 4th gear. I am hoping that having a taller gear would give me a better chance. I believe that having a taller rear tire(22inch) helps to maintain traction off the line, with spinning less, and also gives me better top end compared to a 20 inch tire. Even if I went with a 14 front and a 35 rear, I seriously dought I will be sacrificing much in the trails worth regreting. Is going with this different of a gear change from what I have right now going to help me???? Is a 15 tooth front possible with still running my case saver???

your buddies zillas must run hard. if they are passing you and you're in 4th gear, i think your problem is power, not gearing. usually a 330 with good porting is enough down the average (mind you i said average) zilla ive seen.
now if you were getting passed in 6th, id start playing with gearing.
you're right in the sense of what you'll regret and wont (gearing). just gotta compromise.

I never mentioned I had porting??? Should I have it ported before messing with gearing? How much of a gain will I notice? How about a CR 250 ignition, is this worth having as well?

their site says they do. for a quick answer, you can call ESR to see if they make a case saver for a 15 front and if its possible to run which i wouldnt surprised either way.

If it has porting, then it cant be a lot. I can run my wife's with stock gearing (13-38) and pull out hard all the way until it just noses over. We dont drive all out like that, but the bike will do it. The porting is more than likely a good midrange port to make it really fun. Chances are you might actually be geared a little high with the rollout of the 22'' tires when you get some speed built up. Go back to a 13 and try them again. You might be surprised to see you holeshot them better and keep pulling them or at least hold them off. Remember that lowering the gear ratio will also slow your tire speed on takeoff and let them hook up better. A good ignition is a big plus on these bikes, and also what reeds and carb are you running?Bubba
