sparks416national:

No I don't race, but my son does. He's TT racing in CMA's Bounty Hunter series.
he's currently 1st in the 80 cc's, and tied for 1st in the 90cc's. This weekend is the last
race weekend. He races Friday and then again on Sunday.

No he doesn't have Elka's on the front. He has Kasea 90 shocks covered with black shockwears. We didn't end up going to the Holister race. I had too much other work to do around the property, and also got to thinking that I didn't want anything to happen to his quad a week before the final race weekend (last points race). Well... it was a heck of a week. We tried putting on a CT high- Rev pipe and the qaud seemed to just load up on the bottom and got worse under a load. We then spent 2-3 week nights checking everything imaginable. We tried every needle, pilot jet, main jet setting/combination & timing. We checked the compression, reeds and the crank seals for any air leaks in the motor. It did get slightly better, but it still wasn't completely right. So we decided to go back to the mid range pipe, old/original jets, settings & timing. Well to our surprise it was a little better, but still as good as it had been in the past. So Friday came and we just loaded it up as is and drove out to Madera. Once there we kept monkeying with it and asked advise from our other mini racer comrades, no change. The only thing I could think of was possibly a float problem as we had a "noted builder" adjust the float a while back. One of the guys suggested we borrow his carb. We said what the heck do we have to lose, tried it and wham!! we were back in business. We ended up winning the 80 cc main and got second in the 90 cc main. We left that night and went home to re-work the quad. On Saturday we pulled the good carb open, measured the float setting and set our carb the same way and presto... our carb was back in business. We then again tried the high Rev pipe and it just wasn't as good off the bottom as the mid range pipe, so we put the mid range pipe back on and called it a day. Got up Sunday morning, loaded up and drove back to Madera. In the 90 main we tried running another quad that in that in the past had been fast (stroker motor). It belonged to a friend, but it had recently changed hands as it was sold to another friend. Well... it tuned out to be slower than it had been in the past. Apparently the the new owner didn't have the mechanical skills to maintain it like the previous guy had. It seemed to rev up and run well, but once on the track it was apparent it wasn't as fast as it used to be. Our guess was the clutches were probably at fault. They must not have been getting the every race maintenance like they had in the past. We ended up 3rd in the 90 race, and 2nd in the final point standings. The 80cc race was next. We switched back to our now trusty LT. He lead it wire to wire and clinched 1st in the the 80cc standings. He even beat one of our gang that we typically couldn't in the past. Now we start plotting for next year!!!
