Default 2003 400ex. What mods after piping?

I just threw on a White Bros E-series pipe on my stock 400ex. It will not stay running once it gets warm unless I have the choke fully on and even then it will die out after a few minutes. What do I need to do? Will just jetting it do the trick? If so, what size? I live in Michigan and do most of my riding in the Baldwin area and at Silver Lake. HELP!!!

Yeah don't even start it again without re-jetting the carb. If you have the air box lid on about a 155 main jet, without the lid a 170 or so. You could also go up one on the pilot and pick up the needl jet one spot.

Hey Tractor....I put a bigger pilot and a 160 main and it rips! Thanks for the heads up. She runs a little rich now though. If I back off the mixture screw is it gonna mess up bad or should I run it for awhile and see how it does? I don't even need the choke to start now...and I get the tell tale black smoke puffs after it sits for a few.....

Your mixture screw is really only for idle and a little bit of throttle. And a little rich is always nice if ur coneserned about reliability.

Yeah the air screw won't help much. Try a 155 main jet and see if that cleans it up any. If you just ride sand you can open your air box and go up to a 175 or so. That will get you more top end power.

take the carb off and clean it good. a 155 keihin is about right. going larger will only hurt top speed

I thought it was just me when I noticed that slight reduction at top end.

I agree with Cal. try a #155 that's what I run. I tried a #158 over the weekend and it was to much.

i would say get a new carb like a 36mm mikuni and i would also run it with a vented airbox lid or without one but without one you bike sounds alot different i would get a k&N air filter or a uni, if you have the money i would put a big bore kit on it and then you pust it up to a 440 with a proformance or a toruqe cam with profermance valves also i would have it ported it. this will give you all the power you need and all the power that you will need.

1988 250x
big bore kit
hole shot tires
FMF pipe
fly handle nars
AC grab bar
proformance cam
proformance valves
ported and polished

Keep in mind your pilot and needle don't quit flowing because you have it at full throttle. The size of pilot and position of the needle clip can affect the size of main you need. So can elevation, temp and airbox mods.
