whats the best trail bike
#2
We talking sport or utility here??? Tell us something specific about your riding conditions. These are my comments on the bikes I have owned:
450R-Great trail chassis. Extremely precise, accurate handling. But, not at all geared for the trail (in stock form) and has an extremely revvy powerband, not unlike a 2-stroke. Would need some gearing changes, and you will need to learn how to manage the clutch. No reverse or electric start, so only intended for us purists!
400EX-Great agile handling and good power. Motor doesn't mind being lugged down in the tight, semi-technical stuff. My pick for tighter trails. 05 has reverse, for those who insist.
Z400-Handles just like the 400EX, but with more power. Motor likes to rev though, and doesn't like to be lugged down. My pick for more open, non-technical trails.
300EX-Maybe the best sport trail ride of all time. Medium size and extremely agile, but a little underpowered (compared to the above). I flick this thing around like a toy! Most fun!!!
Warrior-Handles heavy.......especially poor in technical stuff.
Blaster-Great agile handling, but you have to deal with the 2-stroke powerband. What a toy! To small for the average adult.
250EX-Agile handling. Medium size but suspension shows its utility heritage. Autoclutch is great for technical stuff. 50 lbs. lighter than Recon.
Rancher-Great trail machine, especially the 2X4. Very agile for a ute. Not to big and not to small. Autoclutch.
Recon-A real kick to ride! Medium size and easy to ride, but suspended like a ute. Autoclutch.
LT-160-Agile, but heavyish and underpowered. Small, so it is kind of fun to ride. Autoclutch.

We have some real nasty, "rock crawling" trails in my local mountains. For that kind of stuff I will take a Rancher, which has 10" of clearance. But, we also have some nicely groomed single track, and on that I prefer the quick handling of the 400EX, but it only has about 4.5" clearance with a DG skid plate (I also run a DG full chassis skid plate.) If I get into some rocks, I can often skid the bike over, but if I get hung up, I can just get off the bike, and pick it off the hang up.
