Default eton 90 -rough running after water stall

Hi Guys! Newbie here with a question about a '02 viper 90 that my son (with my encouragement) put into a small mud/water bog about up to the floorboards. It stalled in the bog, we pulled it out and it started back up but has run rough ever since. I've drained the fuel tank and float bowl, cleaned airbox and filter, cleared the crankcase, cleaned the flywheel-stator assy which was full of mud, checked piston and cyl which looked good with good compression, belts and pulleys were clean and dry when inspected, after all that it still runs rough. Any suggestions? how do I check the timing? Stator?

You need to check the output of the stator. The service manual should have the specs or do some research online. Did you pull the flywheeel? If not, I would. You need to make sure that there is no mud or gunk in there anywhere. I would then lightly sand the flywheel. All of this of course if the stator output is lower than specs. If stator output is normal, try a new plug. Then I would pull the carb and go completely through it. Remove all the jets and blow compressed air in and out of everywhere. Anytime I've had problems because of playing in the water, its usually the carb. But you said that the flywheel was covered in mud, so that raises some question. Hope this helps.

Bill

oldyeller from Ontario, Canada has posted that the Viper didn't take on water very well, or very deep. he may have gone through similar problems. i'd suggest PMing him. (click on the padlock option to send a private message).

Thanks Guys for the help! I totally removed the stator assy and cleaned it off with electrical contact cleaner. Then went though the carb real good. Cleaned and di-greased all the electrical connections. This all seems to have done the trick. The viper is alive and strong again! Thanks again.

sucks tho, that you have to avoid water up to the floorboards. especially for a quad that seems otherwise perfect.

Let me know if you're interested in comparing notes on these things.
